Adapted Beamforming: A Robust and Flexible Approach for Removing Various Types of Artifacts from TMS–EEG Data Authors: Johanna Metsomaa, Yufei Song, Tuomas P. Mutanen, Pedro C. Gordon, Ulf Ziemann, Christoph Zrenner & Julio C. Hernandez-Pavon Transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with electroencephalography (TMS–EEG) is a safe and non-invasive technique that has been successfully used for basic and clinical research. TMS–EEG allows one to investigate cortical connectivity and the neurophysiology of the human brain. However, there are still challenges in the application of TMS–EEG. A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial of Targeted Prefrontal Cortex Modulation with Bilateral tDCS in Patients with Crack-Cocaine Dependence Authors: Edson Kruger Batista, MSc, MD, Jaisa Klauss, MSc, Felipe Fregni, MD, PhD, MPH, Michael A. Nitsche, MD, Ester Miyuki Nakamura-Palacios, MD, PhD DOI: https://lnkd.in/eVKfTde2 Transcranial direct current stimulation over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex has been shown to be clinically useful in the treatment of drug addiction. A careful assessment of quality of life was made in this study, especially because crack-cocaine addiction has tremendous harmful impacts on the individual’s life, the families, and the community he/she lives in. In this study the individual’s overall perception of quality of life and health improved in crack-cocaine users treated with tDCS after the end of the treatment. By contrast, those who were treated with sham-tDCS showed a change in the opposite direction, that is, towards decrement of quality of life. In addition, the self-esteem of crack-cocaine users from the real tDCS group improved in the psychological domain. Scientific Discussion: Neuromodulation Devices Integration for Translational Applications Neuromodulation is the strategic alteration of neural activity through the delivery of targeted stimuli—electrical, chemical, or magnetic—to achieve desired physiological outcomes. Integration of neuromodulation devices into translational research bridges advances in neuroscience, engineering, and computational modeling. This integration focuses on transforming research innovations into tools for potential clinical applications, addressing neurological and psychiatric conditions. Simultaneous EEG and fMRI: towards the characterization of structure and dynamics of brain networks. Author: Christoph Mulert DOI: https://lnkd.in/eVVJhvzX After several years of development, EEG-fMRI is now routinely performed in many MRI centers and both safety and signal quality issues can be addressed sufficiently. An appealing aspect of the combination of these methods is the fact that both EEG and fMRI are overlapping in their sensitivity to synaptic processing and accordingly brain function can be assessed by means of simultaneous EEG-fMRI with high temporal and high spatial resolution. One of the most promising applications for EEG-fMRI today is the characterization of brain network structure and dynamics. Alzheimer's researchers say brain stimulation device may slow symptoms Authors: Linda Carroll and Mustafa Fattah The only approved treatments for Alzheimer’s disease are medications with limited effectiveness and a risk of severe, sometimes deadly, side effects. That’s why scientists search for therapies that could stop the disease, especially ones that don’t involve drugs. One experimental therapy may slow the progression of symptoms, a small preliminary study suggests. Using a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device, which is widely used to treat depression and other mental illnesses safely, researchers were able to target a key brain network that is involved in storing memories and is typically hit hard by the disease, according to the report presented Thursday at the Clinical Trials in Alzheimer’s Disease meeting in Madrid.
