February is Insurance Careers Month Although the shortest month, insurance careers are long and fulfilling. As a young buck graduating college many moons ago, I had no idea that the world of insurance existed. So, when I started as a claims guy at an insurance brokerage firm in downtown Manhattan in 1983, I got to see how the rubber hits the road from an insurance point of view. Learned the product, made great friends and by taking CPCU opened my eyes to the entire world of insurance. I settled into the ocean marine part of this industry and it has been a blast from day 1. Each day can now take me from underwriting the risks associated with playground sets (a good risk), lithium-ion batteries (just say no), oil shipments (complicated but very doable) to yellowcake (highly secured/regulated and a good risk). Each day brings a new challenge and a chance to broaden my horizons. My thanks to my mentors and colleagues past and present. There are so many avenues to take in the wild and wacky world of insurance and I suggest you check the industry out. There is also the great opportunity to travel to see clients and insurance markets here and abroad. This past year I have been able to warm my old bones in Florida, celebrate Christmas time in chilly Chicago and have some great Italian food in San Francisco.
