September is #NationalPreparednessMonth 🌀 Preparing for natural disasters can greatly reduce risks to your health and the environment. The first step is to make a plan. 📝 ⚠️ Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area. 📵 Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. 📍 Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find. Our mission is to protect human health and the environment.
About us
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mission is to protect human health and the environment. EPA works to ensure that: - Americans have clean air, land and water; - National efforts to reduce environmental risks are based on the best available scientific information; - Federal laws protecting human health and the environment are administered and enforced fairly, effectively and as Congress intended; - Environmental stewardship is integral to U.S. policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry, and international trade, and these factors are similarly considered in establishing environmental policy; - All parts of society--communities, individuals, businesses, and state, local and tribal governments--have access to accurate information sufficient to effectively participate in managing human health and environmental risks; - Contaminated lands and toxic sites are cleaned up by potentially responsible parties and revitalized; and - Chemicals in the marketplace are reviewed for safety. The agency was founded in 1970 and is headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia with ten additional regional headquarters offices (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle) as well as more than a dozen laboratories, and other regional and programmatic offices.

We're proud to announce #EPAers Shannon and Alison are being honored with an Arthur S. Flemming Award, which recognizes excellence in government service! Shannon from EPA's Office of Research developed revolutionary tools that can help identify environmental microbial contaminants that impact human health. Because of her innovation, she continues to expand her work to detect infection from other environmentally transmitted pathogens important to EPA's mission and, more broadly, to global public health. Alison from EPA Region 9 leads some of the most challenging and innovative cleanups and initiatives in the Pacific Southwest, achieving widespread environmental and public health protection. When faced with the toughest challenge of her career, a catastrophic fuel spill and contamination of an aquifer relied upon by 93,000 people, she leapt into action and created a multidisciplinary team to develop options for resolution, investigations, and defueling. Late last month, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Chickasaw Nation to establish a framework to jointly develop research strategies and identify approaches for sustainably managing groundwater resources in Oklahoma. The Chickasaw Nation has long been an important environmental partner and this MOU builds on and replaces two previous agreements between EPA and the Chickasaw Nation from 2008 and 2016. Learn how we're working together to sustain and improve community health, meet environmental protection goals, and provide sustainable resources for future generations ⬇️ https://spgv.io/6043BzR

Pea soup? 🫛 No, algal bloom! Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a major environmental problem across the U.S. HABs can produce dangerous toxins that can sicken or kill people and animals, create low-oxygen or dead zones in the water, threaten people's access to water, raise water treatment costs, and hurt industries that depend on clean water. ☝️You can help report suspected freshwater HABs using our bloomWatch application.
