Dr. Amanda Verma, WashU Medicine Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Cardio-Obstetrics, appeared on Fox 2 news segment STL Moms to promote awareness about cardiovascular issues during pregnancy. Dr. Verma provided information on some of the conditions that can occur during or after pregnancy, noting that the most common is high-blood pressure, or pre-eclampsia. She gave tips on what to do to stay heart healthy to prepare for a pregnancy, especially if a patient has a history of heart issues, and when a cardiology specialist may be needed. Genomics researchers at WashU Medicine will play pivotal roles in the Human Virome Program, a new National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative to better understand the vast and varied collection of viruses that live in and on our bodies, known as the human virome, and how they affect our overall health. In a new round of funding announced by the NIH, WashU Medicine researchers have been awarded two of the five grants under a specific initiative of the program — which is the study of viral interactions with human microbial hosts.
