A few years ago, I wrote a post on Quora about interview process for Principal Engineer role at Amazon. In that post, I shared my own experiences as the recruiter owning that hiring process, as well as tips from other Principal Engineers who had been through the process. Even today, I get weekly emails and messages from senior engineers who saw that post and want to learn more about the Amazon interview. We often end up talking about more than just Amazon. We discuss career development and interview skills in general. I really enjoy those conversations! Since 2017 (when I wrote the Quora post), Amazon has created several helpful resources to prepare candidates for their interviews. Here below are those "official" interview prep materials. While my overall satisfaction with their service has been high, I find it necessary to address a few serious concerns that have surfaced in the past two years. Notably, Amazon has begun selling products without adequate verification with their partner companies, resulting in various customer issues. Furthermore, I have observed a decline in customer service quality, with representatives occasionally displaying impoliteness and providing information about partner companies unfamiliar to consumers like myself. The recent tightening of the return window, which now closes within three days, has further complicated matters, leaving me unable to either return an item or request a replacement, creating a distressing situation. It is concerning that despite #governmental efforts to promote consumer awareness, there appears to be insufficient scrutiny of e-commerce policies and the practices of companies that produce products with potentially deceptive intentions. An example of this is #crossbeats, a company that has gained notoriety for questionable practices. After speaking with a representative from their service center in #Delhi & #Gurgaon, I learned about the company's current state and the factors contributing to their market decline. Nevertheless, Amazon continues to offer their products, thereby profiting from defective items sold to unsuspecting customers. For this reason, it is prudent to exercise caution when purchasing products from Amazon. I strongly advise everyone to "take screenshots before making a purchase," as recommended by an Amazon customer service representative. They have indicated that they may be unable to assist in resolving such issues. It is advisable to refrain from purchasing products from Amazon, especially if the company's service center mentions a 7-day replacement policy or disclaims responsibility for the product, as this may indicate awareness of the product's potential to mislead consumers. This situation is alarming, and if companies like this begin to market potentially hazardous products, it may only be a matter of time before governmental intervention becomes necessary. Therefore, it is crucial for Amazon to reevaluate its partnerships and customer service strategies to prevent further consumer harm. I think 2024 is the best period for FAANG engineers to transition into LinkedIn influencers. Basic requirement for become a LinkedIn influencer : 100k subs. Even openings in small companies are getting like 10-14k applications in 1 day. Openings in FAANGs should get more than 20-30k applications. Simply repost your company job openings on LinkedIn. Then ask people to like share follow you and " DM you for. referral" . Then don't accept the connection requests. Just keep them on the follow. Finally Darwin award to whoever is filling up those referral forms . It's basically like workday except your resume does not reach a recruiter. Your resume reaches an employee who might or might not take it up to a recruiter. So instead of 1 level now your application has 2 levels to clear before you would be eligible for an interview.

🚀 𝗠𝘆 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 🌟 I recently had the opportunity to interview for a Business Analyst role at Amazon. Though I didn’t secure the role, the experience was immensely valuable, and I’d like to share my journey and lessons to help others preparing for similar opportunities. ⏳ 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 1️⃣ Application: I applied online, and shortly after, a recruiter reached out to discuss the role and my background. 2️⃣ Phone Interview with Recruiter: This was an initial screening to align my skills, experiences, and career goals with the job requirements. 3️⃣ Phone Interview & Live Coding: This round combined behavioral questions with a technical SQL coding test. The coding section started with foundational queries and built up to complex scenarios, requiring advanced use of window functions, joins, and Common Table Expressions (CTEs). 👉 𝘗𝘳𝘰 𝘛𝘪𝘱: Practice SQL challenges, especially those involving real-world business problems. Be clear about your thought process during the coding session. 4️⃣ Final Interview Loop (2 Days, 5 Rounds): Four Behavioral Rounds: Each round was deeply rooted in Amazon’s Leadership Principles, requiring examples of how I’ve demonstrated ownership, collaboration, and problem-solving. 👉 𝘗𝘳𝘰 𝘛𝘪𝘱: Prepare at least two varied examples for each principle and focus on the impact of your actions. One Technical Round: This round tested analytical and technical skills through SQL problem-solving and interpretation of ambiguous business scenarios. 🎓 𝗠𝘆 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 1️⃣ Leadership Principles Are Non-Negotiable: Amazon’s Leadership Principles guide every aspect of the interview. Structuring answers using the STAR format helped me articulate my experiences effectively. 2️⃣ SQL and Problem-Solving Are Key: The technical rounds required both technical proficiency and business acumen. Preparing with Leetcode and real-world datasets was invaluable. 3️⃣ Growth Over Outcome: While I didn’t achieve the outcome I hoped for, I gained insights that will sharpen my skills for future opportunities. Every interview is a step forward. 🌟 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗽 This journey reminded me that resilience and continuous learning are essential. 🚀 Making LLMs work for you - A Guide to Become 10x Programmer/MLE/DS I am sure many of you use LLMs for your day-to-day work. Mostly, I have seen people use LLMs while writing code (Copilot), or as an alternative to Copilot to catch bugs, but they have become much more useful than that, provided you know how to use them well. Here are a few ways I have been using LLMs in my daily work that are helping me increase my productivity: 📚 1. Quick Paper Assessment with ELI5 Summaries - Paper abstracts are called abstracts for a reason. Asking an LLM for an ELI5 summary makes it much easier to know if I want to read a paper. 💻 2. Implementing Research Papers in Code - Try giving an LLM like Claude/ChatGPT a research paper and ask to code it. You would be surprised. Tip: Claude performs much better for this task. 🔄 3. Upgrading Code Structure and Readability - Do you want to add typing hints when writing your Python code, or do you need comments in your code, or do you have a big function that you want to be converted to classes in your code? LLMs can do it all, and you would be amazed at the code-conversion power they have. ⚡ 4. Optimizing Code Performance - The thing with LLMs is that if you tell them what to do, they can do it well. For example, if you give them a non-optimized piece of code that runs correctly, they will be able to write it in a much-optimized way. For example, I just used an LLM to convert a matrix multiplication in PyTorch to sparse MM as I was getting an OOM memory error because one of the matrices became too large. I am not even joking, but that would have taken at least 1-2 hours for me to come up with. 📝 5. Automated Documentation - Got bored of writing documentation for what you did but have the code? LLMs also work the other way around. Want to write a summary of what you did in a week, you can use an LLM for that. Saves so much time that gets wasted in formatting. 🧪 6. Streamlined Test Framework Creation - Let LLMs handle the boilerplate for Unit tests & Integration tests while you focus on core logic. 🌐 7. Language-Agnostic Development - You can paste a function in Python and ask for its equivalent in Rust, complete with language-specific best practices and error handling. This dramatically reduces the learning curve when working with new languages and helps maintain productivity during language transitions. 🤝 Apart from all of the above, LLMs work well as mentors as well as interns. LLMs are great when you just need someone to bounce ideas with. I sometimes just talk to an LLM as I would to a colleague talking about the problems I have and how I can solve them. And they come up with the right ideas or send me in the right direction a lot of times. They also act as a personal assistant for free, who can deal with writing messages, creating charts, and doing all sorts of uninteresting work for you. 💭 What's your favorite way to use LLMs? Project focus & GitHub – Got no job experience? Highlight your projects. - Showcase your coding projects and maintain a professional GitHub profile 4. Tech stack matters – Emphasize the technologies and tools you used in your projects 5. Cut the unnecessary – Only include relevant accomplishments that show you are a good fit for the role. Highlight major achievements that are recognized in the industry and are relevant to the job. 6. List your educational qualifications – List your most recent degree first. 7. Stop rewriting your resume for every single ML or AI position. Instead, pick 1 or 2 areas of expertise and build a solid portfolio. Unfortunately, most people waste countless hours customizing their resumes to fit every ML opening, hoping for callbacks. When in fact, it is a completely wrong strategy! Every ML position has its main focus area. You need to identify your 1 - 3 areas of technical expertise. It can be: ⭐️ NLP and LLMs ⭐️ Recommended systems ⭐️ Computer vision ⭐️ Reinforcement Learning ⭐️ Etc… Based on those, build your main 2-3 resumes with portfolio projects that focus on each methodology. So next time you will apply for a job you will pick one of the 3 instead of creating one from scratch. This will keep you focused and show potential employers that you are indeed knowledgeable in your focus area. ... For Leetcode preparation, check out Navdeep Singh. He created neetcode.io, which is a fantastic resource for organizing Leetcode studying.
