Three Cline Library colleagues partnered with collaborators from University of Arizona and Diné College to present "Collaborative Care for Moving Images on the Colorado Plateau" at the 2024 Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) conference, held from November 12-14 in Palm Springs. NAU’s Nix Mendy, Sam(antha) Meier and Kelly Phillips discussed their work on “Digitizing the Moving Images of the Colorado Plateau and the American Southwest,” a three-year project funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This project builds capacity to care for audiovisual materials held by NAU and Indigenous partners the Hualapai Tribe, the Hopi Tribe, and Diné College on the Navajo Nation. A key aspect of the NAU team’s approach was learning how to digitize film first, then engaging with the tribes to discuss their films, thereby gaining expertise and sharing knowledge. The tribes retain full autonomy over how they wish to provide access to their films in the future, with the team offering guidance. Fellow presenters Jennifer L. Jenkins of University of Arizona and Rhiannon Sorrell of Diné College shared how their NEH project, “Tribesourcing Southwest Film” merged with NAU’s. For example, some Diné College films digitized by the Cline Library project will be embedded into the Tribesourcing Southwest Film project, of which Jenkins is the principal investigator and Sorrell is the Diné narration coordinator. During this tumultuous U.S. election season, our team at University of Washington has continued our “rapid" research on rumors about election administration. The goal of this work is to help election officials, journalists, and others anticipate and quickly respond to rumors about election processes and procedures, to help people get accurate information about when, where, and how to vote, and to help counter false rumors that sow distrust in results — and could be leveraged later to pressure election officials to not certify the results. We have two parallel series. The first is a “What to Expect When We’re Electing” series where we rely on our research into past elections to anticipate what we are likely to see this year. So far, we have published articles that describe the information conditions related to different time periods, highlight how false election rumors tend to mislead in five distinct ways, lay out an “object oriented framework” to help organize the different types of election rumors we are likely to see prior to Election Day, and provide advice for journalists covering elections. The second series, our “rapid research” work, relies on real-time discovery and rapid analysis to quickly unpack emergent rumors and describe how they are spreading across different platforms. Due to the fragmentation of the information space and moves by large platforms to reduce transparency, this work is much harder this year — and it has taken us some time to get our tools and methods in place. But, with the help of various partners, we’re fully operational again! (And we're working across more platforms than ever before.) Among other outputs, we published a piece last week about the spread of rumors about UOCAVA (a law which ensures that Americans living abroad can vote), and are working this weekend on a piece about rumors at the intersection of Hurricane Helene and voting in the 2024 election. We also have a program where local journalists can reach out to ask questions and/or collaborate with our team to understand how a rumor relevant to their community is spreading online. Due to the deterioration of Twitter, where we used to do most of our rapid communication and networking with other researchers, we’re looking for help boosting our signal in other ways. According to the United Nations, when it comes to communicating about climate change, presenting data alone can "numb the audience." Instead, the data must be “relatable, local, and personal.” But as Professor Bill Tomlinson of the UC Irvine Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences knows all too well, that's easier said than done when teaching a class with 300 students!
