Yet some studies estimate that 50 million people living in rural America lack just that. I take no joy in "gotcha" journalism, and I want curbside organics to succeed in NYC. However, when agencies do not assess and publicize, much less learn from, data driven performance analytics, I am compelled to share what I know on behalf of NYC taxpayers, residents, workers, small businesses, and NGOs. These are the groups, not politicos, who will pay for the City's continued data secrecy and unfounded braggadoccio about waste management. I continue to focus on how multi-unit buildings are, and are not, faring under current, mandatory program that will begin enforcement and ticketing in 2025. I am concerned with the effects of this program on hard-working building superintendents and porters, who already shoulder a huge, unacknowledged burden of after-tenant cleanup with paper/metal/glass/plastic recycling. When their bosses start getting fines, they will be left "holding the bag" figuratively and literally. I call for the restoration of funding to GrowNYC and the New York City Compost project in full. I call for the cessation of displacement of Big Reuse and other community composters from land they have taken from dirty and abandoned to productive and healing. I call on the City to listen to community composting, microhauling, and justice-focused organizations; trade unions; small business consortia; and concerned citizens. "Getting organics done" is not rocket science, but it does involve thinking, planning, listening, and feasibility testing. Great points made by Sandra McCroom of Children's Services of Roxbury, Inc. and Rare's own Frank Lowenstein in their op-ed for the Dorchester Reporter on #solar and #ClimateJustice: "those who can least afford it are paying more of their income for power, may lack the savings or credit ratings to be able to put solar and other cost-saving technologies into play, and see a portion of their bill go to subsidize energy efficiency and renewable energy products that are often most utilized in wealthier communities." We despair over the destruction of the Amazon rain forest to supply our taste for beef. This destroys biodiversity and releases sequestered carbon. Meanwhile, we destroy local biodiversity and diminish our land's capacity to sequester carbon merely to make Mother Earth look the way we want Her to look. We did it! The MA Legislature passed ELM’s top two priorities on Thursday, a triumphant return of our Commonwealth’s resolve to address the climate crisis and embrace the clean energy sector’s potential for economic development and innovation. This is a victory not just for our team and for our partners (who put in countless hours over 22 months to see these bills across the finish line), but a tremendous win for everyone who will benefit from a cleaner environment, fairer system, and innovative climate technology. After the Legislature failed to act by July 31, these two climate packages drifted in limbo for much of the fall. But now, they’re headed to Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s desk for signature. I want to share highlights of what will soon become law - and why it's crucial for our fight against the climate crisis. First is the “Climate Omnibus,” https://lnkd.in/eEWxQBgh. This roughly 140 page bill:  • Reforms clean energy siting and permitting for speed and equity   • Authorizes a first-of-its-kind state procurement for energy storage resources  • Increases access to reliable electric vehicle charging  • Expands offshore wind tax incentives and improves the procurement process  • Moves utilities away from natural gas and toward electric alternatives So many components are important. Still, I am particularly pleased to see the thoughtful and significant reforms to energy siting and permitting. By streamlining processes and front-loading effective community engagement, we can accelerate the modernization of our electric grid, no longer falling victim to a slow and unresponsive system. Second is the Economic Development Bill, https://lnkd.in/eaEy4npg, which makes historic investments to grow, attract and retain the climate tech sector, as well as build a world-class workforce to run it. Modeled after the initiative that launched MA's dominance in life sciences, this bill funds our first 10-year strategy for climate tech and has been a key priority for both ELM and Governor Healey.   I firmly believe MA can – and must – be the best place in the nation to seed and scale the policies and technologies the world needs for a brighter future. ELM recognizes that, while we celebrate today, our work does not end here. In the months ahead, we will collaborate closely with the Admin to ensure the effective implementation of these bills, plus advance many other Legislative and Regulatory priorities to move MA forward.
