Some early next-day thoughts about #DASH2024 in New York City this year: 👌 Logs Workspaces look super promising ☀️ Flex Logs go GA (can't wait for Flex Traces 👀) 💥 On-call (👋 Opsgenie & PagerDuty) 🙈 GitHub is on Datadog (and OpenTelemetry!) 💸 Paypal is on Datadog too! 💜 OpenTelemetry + Datadog are getting closer than ever 🎉 Serverless improvements 🥂 Product Analytics revamp, becoming a proper competitor with products like Amplitude 🤖 Bits AI is being used in more and more products 👏 App Builder (custom UI components you can build yourself into the Datadog UI) is better than ever. 🤯 Live Debugger - merges the concepts of debugging and tracing 🔐 Datadog secures the entire software development cycle My biggest takeaway though is that Datadog is bigger than ever. But they are still developing products at an incredible pace and quality. From a Product perspective, they are hitting the nail on the head over and over again. Datadog releases things as early as possible as "Beta", "Private Beta" etc. This may frustrate users (as early products are immature), but it actually provides incredible opportunities for feedback. A bit of an observation: There are a lot more instances where Datadog goes past this "understanding platform" idea. It's now moving to be able to take action. This can be a slippery slope but I do think in many cases it makes loads of sense. A roundup from Datadog themselves of the keynote:

Terraform's Import block functionality will help give a lot of companies the ability to bring their existing infrastructure under a unified code base. Now with the ability to use for_each inside their import block this video shows a cool way to utilize that feature to build on top of your existing pipelines without having to re-engineer anything.

Massive news for .NET folks - AWS SnapStart for Lambda is now available for .NET (and Python, but whatever ;) ). I have a personal connection to this release, as I was lucky enough to be a beta tester behind the scenes on SnapStart for .NET. It wasn't just exciting to see the difference it's made to the cold start problem for some of our Lambda stacks (can't wait to get this into production) but it was a fascinating look behind the scenes on how AWS elicits feedback straight from customers just like you and I. I got to work (virtually) side by side with some talented engineering folks from the AWS Lambda/.NET team and understand how they approach experimentation and gathering statistics for the value proposition of whatever feature they're building. There's something exciting about hacking together some C# code into the constructor of your Lambda in a peer programming session with AWS folks from here and abroad. I even got to learn/hear about some of the behind the scenes of how lambda containers are initialised. Valuable insights. Special thanks to our relentlessly awesome solution architect Robbie Cooray for getting me involved in the beta testing, and continuing to do great work behind the scenes. Chatgpt is becoming more of a great everyday tool in an IT person's toolbox. The more you understand it and understand how to extract the information you need out of it, its easy to skip pass the fluff or things that dont make sense. Needing to import hundreds of existing subnets into terraform using terraforms import block, i knew i did not want to import all of that per subnet and that i also needed to import these into modules. Essentially I have a code block that does a for_each through all of the subnets that come into the variable. import {  for_each = { for key, value in var.subnet : key => value if value.import }  id = each.value.import_resource_id  to = module.subnet.azurerm_subnet.main[each.key] } Only problem was i needed all of those subnets in a specific format in my tfvars file before i could do that. In comes chatgpt and a very much needed python script. As somebody who didnt have the need or time to spend a ton of time writing that script out, i was able to ask it a very small subset of questions piecing this script together found here in my github https://lnkd.in/gWSarEpH. I of course used powershell to export out the subnets in a specific format also that was needed. All in i was able to take a task that could have taken me days to complete by not having to manually import all those subnets in one by one and also generating a script using chatgpt vs having to search forums and ask around and get a bunch of methods for the same outcome.
