Another very cool podcast on Inversion, this time on The Orbital Mechanics podcast. I have been listening to The Orbital Mechanics since college, so it is pretty so fun to hear the work I am doing being discussed on the show! There’s also a great elevator pitch for Inversion that should help answer the questions people often ask, including: “What does Inversion do?” “Who is the customer base?” “How is that possible?” Minute 21:53 is where Inversion comes on. Some of my personal favorite moments are: 38:00, when the Recovery Team is discussed. 43:40, when Justin talks about recovery operations. 48:10 when Justin recounts a drop test that didn’t exactly go as planned… Enjoy!

I’ve been watching the Starliner mission to the ISS and, I must say, I’m disappointed with the reporting in the press. Article banners have been reading “Crew stranded in space” and other such sensationalism. Granted, he vehicle is not behaving perfectly. Also, it’s not news that BCA—Boeing Commercial Aircraft—has challenges they need to resolve. That’s all fair. And I understand that most reporters are not engineers. But… The problems being reported on the Starliner, namely reaction control thruster and helium leaks in the propulsion system, are all located on the spacecraft’s service module. When the crew departs the ISS and deorbits, the service module is discarded and burns up in the atmosphere on reentry. Thus, the helium systems and thrusters will not return to earth for failure analysis. They’re gone. As such, the only way to get insight into what might be going on there is in space. Boeing and NASA have extended the mission in order to collect more data. The helium system is isolated and won’t be reactivated until undocking, which is seven hours before landing. There’s plenty of helium onboard for that operation. The only way to understand what is occurring is to get more data, which can only be done on orbit. That’s not the same thing as being stranded. The fourth estate plays a critical role in our democracy, offering transparency and accountability. But, sensationalism, in my mind, is not helpful. Thoughts?
