I never thought I would have a 100-hour work week. But that’s what happened back during my junior year at USF. So I had the opportunity to be apart of ReliaQuest first cyber security boot camp at USF. They wanted to bridge the gap for cyber security training in Tampa where they are headquartered so they ran a 5-week bootcamp for USF Business and engineering students. I had no idea what to expect but I interviewed and go inside of the program. (Another reason why to always put yourself out there) On top of working at Publix Super Markets as a Deli Clerk and going to school full time, I was spending another 30 hours or so every week to make sure I learned the material for the program. That’s how we get to the magic number of 100 for me during the final week. Honestly one of the hardest things that I had to do in my career so far. But was it worth it? 1000 percent. I got to meet some of the coolest and smartest people that I still know to this day and are friends with. When I went through that intense process and came out on the other side I realized that if I can make it through this then anything else that I face in my cyber career wont stop me. And I was right. Reason I tell this story is for anyone wanting to get in this field or wanting to get promoted to not be afraid and don't self-doubt yourself. You are the person who has the most power to change yourself and create the career and life that you want and deserve. Never forget that. I recently went to an industry event in Atlanta and met up with some of Atlanta's tech and cybersecurity leaders. Many know that I run OWASP Atlanta with the great co-leaders of Guled Abdilahi, Ayliffe B., & Ralph Adame who have been instrumental in helping run the chapter. Today, young professionals are increasingly drawn to cybersecurity careers, often motivated by the promise of high salaries and the industry's growing demand. However, in the rush to secure roles, many rely heavily on certifications that only provide a surface-level understanding. While these certifications are beneficial and can open doors, the core essence of cybersecurity lies in a deeper, more comprehensive grasp of fundamental concepts and skills. To bridge this gap, I’ve developed a detailed roadmap designed to build both foundational and advanced expertise over a 10-month journey. This roadmap ensures that aspiring cybersecurity professionals don't just accumulate credentials but also develop the critical skills needed to excel in the field. Roadmap Overview: Phase 1: IT Fundamentals (Months 1-2) Focus on understanding computer systems, operating systems, and networking essentials. Phase 2: Networking & Basic Security (Months 3-4) Deep dive into networking models, protocols, and foundational cybersecurity principles. Phase 3: Intermediate Cybersecurity Skills (Months 5-7) Emphasis on system hardening, ethical hacking, penetration testing, and Security+ certification. Phase 4: Advanced Skills & Freelancing (Months 8-10) Practical projects, portfolio building, and freelancing to gain real-world experience and secure entry-level roles. The roadmap also provides options to specialize in Penetration Testing, Cloud Security, or SOC Analyst roles, emphasizing hands-on learning and critical security concepts. Goal: Equip future cybersecurity experts with a robust, well-rounded foundation, ensuring they can confidently tackle industry challenges and not just rely on certifications. This structured plan is meant to inspire and guide those serious about making a meaningful impact in the cybersecurity field!

Twin 1: My name is Cassandra Chibueze, a security engineer Twin 2: I am Stephanie Chibueze, a SOC analyst "We both have a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy but our #cybersecurity journey began two years ago when our University went on a nine-month strike! During that time I tried to learn various skills, but everything felt like trial and error. After much searching, we stumbled upon cybersecurity. One fateful day, I came across an Instagram page called SisiNerd. I didn’t know who Confidence Staveley was at the time, but one day, she shared the post for the CyberGirls 3.0 application. With the speed of light, we applied together, patiently awaiting the entire interview process. Thankfully, we both got selected. The training began as soon as the strike ended, and I returned for my final year in school. Balancing the final year as a pharmacy student was daunting. However, effective time management and resilience were key to overcoming this hurdle. We successfully graduated from both school and the training program with excellent results. It wasn't long after graduation that we saw the application post for the Digiss internship. Out of 1,000 applicants, only 6 were selected, and my twin and I both got in! This internship allowed us to solidify our cybersecurity foundation and gain practical experience. The comprehensive training from the CyberGirls program, played a huge role in our success and made us standout candidates. On the first day at Digiss, we both suffered a road accident caused by a careless driver. It was a humbling moment, and we were grateful to be alive. It slowed us down a bit, but we returned stronger and better. We are grateful for the kindness and understanding of the Digiss work environment, allowing us time to heal and return stronger. We have both secured full-time roles. I am working full-time as a SOC Analyst with an international cybersecurity company, SHELT Global Ltd . I had the opportunity to interview with them during the CyberSafe Foundation hiring summit, and I absolutely fell in love with the company. I never imagined I would be where I am today, and the level of fulfillment I experience every morning, doing what I love, is indescribable. The icing on the cake is that I get to share these changes with my twin sister, who now works as a Security Engineer. To any young African woman out there considering a career in tech: remember, you can rise from anything. You can recreate yourself. You have choices. You can think new thoughts, learn new skills, and create new habits. Decide today to pursue your dreams and never look back. As I was browsing through the latest edition of "The Cost of a Data Breach" report, I read that stolen or compromised credentials take a whopping 292 days to resolve. IBM cost of breach report is out. Key theme: Company doubling down on selling AI says AI can keep your breach costs down and speed your recovery.
