We are quickly entering the "trough of disillusionment" in the hype cycle for generative AI. While GPTs excel in automating certain tasks (and can even automate away large portions of some jobs) they often fall short in others. Like all new technology, the issue lies in misapplying generative AI for tasks it wasn't designed for. This is a problem compounded by the GPTs themselves suggesting they can handle these tasks (often cheerfully!). This misalignment creates frustration and unmet expectations which we're starting to see more of these days. As the dust settles I firmly believe we'll recognize GPTs as a transformative technology across many industries. However it's crucial to understand their limitations and apply them appropriately. What are your thoughts on the current state of generative AI and its future applications?

AI has been around for the last 35 years or more ... The processing power from the advancement in chip technology and the new techniques in data mining and manipulation has put AI to the forefront. While Turing mind over machine question still lingers ... we can see how AI will approximate human thought and action pattern void of emotion. However when 'Artificial-Emotions - AE ' development is fully mature, Turing's question will fully be answered.

A company’s product/technology org being called “EPD”, “PED” or some other acronym standing for "product, engineering, design" is a strong smell that the company is a political mess. If that org is called "R&D," it's a smell that means the company is run by finance/MBA people. Why finance, btw? "R&D" (research & development) is a legacy term — certain payroll/etc costs are tax deductible, based in the old-school manufacturing mindset that "product development" was just an investment or cost center, and not revenue-generating as it is in software.

Looking for a contract project (10 hours/week) where I'd love to help you go from 0 to 1 with an LLM-powered product or feature quickly. A bit about me: - Launched https://jakeai.org/ and went from idea to first revenue in 2 weeks. - Built two bootstrapped startups that generated a total of $200K in revenue. The first one was an AI analyst for business angels. The second one was a hilarious chatbot psychologist, Josef Freudman. - ex LLM-product builder at Reface🇺🇦, a16z-backed gen AI company. What I can help with: - Taking LLM-powered products from 0 to 1 fast - literally taking an idea and validating/iterating it. - Validating and implementing an LLM-powered feature in your product. Who I can help the most: - Startups that want to launch and get their first customers. - Startups and companies exploring the launch of a new product or feature. If this sounds like something that could help you out, feel free to message me here on LinkedIn or by email: [email protected]

This is just incredible. Neal Ghosh's demonstration of how #VentureIQ takes deeply technical and complicated content across a range of industrial use cases and ages/stages through an AI-generated conversational podcast (a la #notebookLM) is really mind-blowing. Check out his post, below, and if you haven't seen VentureIQ, yet, let's get you set up to learn more. You can visit VentureIQ.ai or DM any of us over here to book a demo!

Alphabet committed another $5 billion recently to Waymo's self-driving cars. A renewed vow of confidence. Per my post yesterday, fast growing additional compute and better AI architectures are changing self driving cars rapidly. Notably, some traditional car manufacturers pulled out investments in full self-driving cars. It didn't think the tech was going to be ready for decades to come, if ever. I think it may be a mistake given AI and compute grow exponentially, not linearly. As an example, it may take 20-40 years to achieve 1% of progress, then just 5-10 years for the remaining 99% (instead of 1,000s of years per our intuition) link in comments #AI #Transformers #waymo

Over the past few months at Assembled, we've been exploring how Large Language Models (LLMs) can enhance our engineering workflows. One area where they've made a significant impact is in writing comprehensive tests. Traditionally, writing thorough tests can be time consuming and sometimes gets sidelined due to tight deadlines. By leveraging LLMs, we've been able to generate robust tests much more quickly—tasks that used to take hours now take just minutes. This shift has brought: - Increased adoption of testing: Engineers who previously wrote fewer tests are now consistently incorporating them into their workflow. - Time savings: We've collectively saved hundreds of hours, allowing us to focus more on developing new features and refining existing ones. - Enhanced code quality: Our codebase is better tested, giving us greater confidence in our deployments. I've shared more about our approach, including examples and lessons learned, in a recent blog post. 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gKw3djQu We're excited about the progress we're making and the insights we've gained. If you're interested in the intersection of LLMs and software engineering, or if you're passionate about building tools that transform customer support, I'd love to connect. P.S. We're hiring! Check out our open roles: https://lnkd.in/gSr_wqV7

💡 Why do we need so many evaluation tools for LLMs? As engineers, we build 'production-ready' LLM products using these metrics. But what happens next? How do we maintain control and ensure reliability? At Feedback Intelligence, we’ve crafted a cookbook to keep your LLMs reliable and aligned with user expectations. 🍲 📖 Give it a read and let’s chat!

Chat with Miles Clements about building Linear For me companies are like design problems: you have context, constraints & goals unique to you. Then you look for a solution that has a good fit to your unique problems. The company problem also evolve over times the solution Directly applying what others have done doesn’t work that well, yet there is lot emphasis on playbooks, pattern matching and playing copying what other companies are doing in industry. https://lnkd.in/ghxjJwYU

Strong Opinions Weakly Held #3: Me in 2017: Just make the investment to do it right the first time - save the headache and cost of all the rework! Me in 2021: Just get something out there for people to use. Something is better than nothing. Me in 2024: Typical engineer answer comes back again - it depends. Something is not always better than nothing. It can damage your brand and your standing in customers' eyes and it may be hard to get them to give you a second shot - not everyone understands the idea of "beta stage" and "MVP". But conversely, I've seen far too many projects toil and churn on "Can we actually release this yet? It doesn't have feature X Y Z." DON'T DO THAT. You don't know what customers want until they tell you. Often, they can't tell you until they get some piece of your direction in their minds. The goal is an MVP: Minimal viable product. The problem is: what constitutes minimal? what constitutes viable? and to an extent, what constitutes product? PS: If you want to learn more, come to my #STLStartupWeek talk, "How Not To Build Your MVP: An Engineer's Advice for Non-Technical Founders". Register here:

The 10x engineer is REAL. We've all heard of the elusive and divisive "10x engineer" – a legend in tech circles, rarely spotted in the wild (or in our virtual Gather office), able to do a herculean amount of work compared to everyone else. But as Gergely Orosz aptly notes (https://lnkd.in/dQdDFUwx), the "10x" label can mask less than ideal traits: 🚩 Rapidly producing low-quality code 🚩 Chasing only shiny projects, leaving when the novelty fades 🚩 Taking credit at the expense of team contributions These aren't 10x engineers. The truly exceptional engineers I've met share a common trait: focus on impact. It's not about output, it's about outcomes. At Koala, we believe in "hiring for slope" – a principle my co-founder Tido Carriero often talks about. We're not just looking for 10x achievements, we're looking for engineers who are: 🔹 hungry to learn and grow 🔹 driven to create meaningful impact 🔹 focused on solving real customer pains If this resonates… then we'd love to chat. We're currently hiring engineers across the US and Brazil (https://lnkd.in/eUpECNZj) #hiring #recruiting #engineering

As someone who’s wired this way: In conversation, some engineers, myself included, appreciate being interrupted for the sake of clarity. I certainly appreciate efficient knowledge transfer, constant feedback. Active listening. Many or even most conversations are not comfortable in this style though. In these cases I do the opposite. I commit 100% to following someone else’s train of thought. This is all that I care about. It’s still obsession on being correct, but only in understanding their thought process. Not on objective truth and fact. Let your imagination have fun - try on someone else’s goggles.

Favorite quotables from the Humanloop launch event: ➡️ On engineers’ approach to LLMs: “You hit the API and got a response. Ok great- that doesn’t mean the output is valid or good!" 🫠 -Brianna Connelly ➡️ On prompting: “Non technical people are driving 100% of the best prompting” 😯 -Brianna Connelly ➡️ On being an effective AI Engineer: “You have to upskill and become an engineer/data scientist hybrid to succeed” 📝 -Noam Rubin ➡️ On vibing your way to a half baked AI feature: “LLMs are almost too easy to use!” ✨ -Noam Rubin P.S. Sign of a high value tech event: Diet Coke runs out way before beer. Can't wait to try HumanLoop evals and congrats on the launch Raza Habib Jordan Burgess Andrei Bratu Harry X. 🚀
