I just wrote release notes for the last two weeks to share with Bullish and CoinDesk folks on Slack. I can't put the full set here, but I wanted to share a few: * Ad algorithm improvement to reduce ad density with the aim of having only 1 ad in view at a time, and on mobile, let people have a screen full of content with no ads. * The new price page template should launch in the next 1-2 weeks. Our initial tests show an increase in search impressions of 50%! Plus, they're sexier with more features. * We built some new geotargeting features that I'm pretty excited about. * We're testing some new solutions for translating content. * We're wrapping up design work for a new home page layout 🤘

code debug... a few weeks ago we were trying to fix why the credit card planning in one of our mvps output wrong info -- image below is after fix. thanks to Thanh Nguyen for helping dig to fix this :) u might think, just use calculator to figure out when credit card balance is zero n just use calculator for stuff like retirement. well... what we don't show in that mvp is the custom planning algo we made. it has untapped capability to output a plan... like driving directions, but financially for life. what is shown in the mvp is a crumb of its ability, which of course... if u focused on just the credit card planning, then use simple calculator. but when u need to think about a person's life... a credit card calculator ain't aware of... a retirement calculator, which ain't aware of... a loan calculator, which ain't aware of... a savings calculator, which ain't aware of... a possible vacation, which ain't aware of... a possible sickness, which ain't aware of... weekly steps one should do like turn-by-turn directions on the road. we won't get to surface this custom planning algo until post funding. but... good job Thanh :) #startups #fintech #engineering

Thrilled that mine and Qian Li's paper was just published in the Communications of the ACM! The big challenge we've been working on since grad school is how to make serverless computing work well for stateful applications. This is tricky because it's hard to make long-lived stateful workflows reliable in ephemeral serverless execution environments. The solution, which we talk about in this paper and are building at DBOS, Inc., is using database transactions to make programs durable. The key idea is to store the execution state of a serverless workflow in a database. That way, if the workflow is interrupted, it can automatically recover from where it left off by looking up its execution state in the database. If you know that stateful programs are durable, it becomes a lot easier to make them serverless. You can deploy them to ephemeral executors and leverage their durability to autoscale them and move them between executors as needed. That way, you can build incredibly reliable stateful programs that also benefit from the scalability and convenience of serverless.

Today we're launching our newest candidate quality-of-life feature on Ropes - IDE themes. There's a universal dislike for the rigid IDEs that assessment co's force on candidates. These code editors are slow, clunky, and missing the styes/shortcuts that developers enjoy. Developers are unique, and we work in unique ways. Ropes offers two new options to let candidates keep their style: (1) First, many employers on Ropes allow candidates to work in their own IDEs entirely. We've developed a way to gather insights like you were in the room, while allowing developers to use their daily environments. (2) For cases that need a browser-based IDE - we're giving the ability for candidates to choose their style/editor setup before the assessment starts - so they're comfortable when it begins. --- My bet is that if we build a great experience for candidates, we'll be building a great platform for evaluators, too. I recently created a chain on Memo asking for feedback on programming using AI. My concern is that software engineers, a big chunk of our workforce, would be expected to use AI in the near future, like git, to be more productive. Observability data is untapped goldmine of information, but when the time comes (in the middle of incident), it still requires "expert" skills to find the needle in the haystack. Part 2 of LLM Application development: Unlimited context lengths can lead to huge bills OpenAI, Claude and Gemini now support long context lengths - to astronomical numbers like a million tokens. These rising context lengths are enablers, but they also pose a problem. - it is now too easy to accidentally run expensive queries. 💡 This is particularly the case when doing RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation). Developers often opt into using bigger chunks to split large documents into vector databases. And with long context lengths, they end up retrieving many documents (each of which are large) and adding all of them as context to LLMs. After all, LLMs now support large context lengths. One unique feature of Gemini compared to other LLMs is the ability to analyze YouTube videos and answer related questions. I often prompt Gemini with "Summarize <YouTube link>" to get a summary before watching a video. Thoughts on a Money Movement Tracker for RIA firms? 🤔 Three months ago, I made a fun post about the pain RIA firms experience dealing with over 14 different money movement workflows—like New Account Openings, Account Transfers, ACH Instructions, Conversions, etc Since then, I’ve been posting a variety of content, intentionally steering clear of directly mentioning workflows or processes. I believe it’s more important to understand and speak to the the use-cases that need to be tackled with workflows, processes and automations. Interestingly, that money movement post has outperformed any other use-case post in terms of LinkedIn impressions by more than 7X!........Either my hair looked really good in that post, or maybe its because I mentioned ABBA, or there’s a legitimate use case pain point that needs to be solved for money movement tracking 💸 I've been experimenting with different interface designs, pondering how we could evolve Hubly's Money Movement Workflows through an interface that provides more visibility, control, and insights into all the ongoing money movements for a firm. Here’s my draft design mockup, which might be more relevant for Hubly customers, but I’m sure any advisors and back-office teams in my network could resonate with this type of interface for managing the volume of money movements you track. Essentially, you can turn a workflow into a "Money Movement" workflow, which then automatically creates an audit ledger for that workflow. It also provides an insight button where you can "Track Money Movement," displaying a modal that summarizes the money moved through the "Account Opening Workflow" for example. Thoughts or feedback on this? I would love any comments on how firms are currently tracking their money movements. Spreadsheets? Custodian Interface? I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Beren Millidge on a post summarizing the recent advancements in integer tokenization for LLMs. The post provides detailed analysis on how tokenization strategies affect arithmetic performance for frontier LLMs. We benchmarked a wide range of models (GPT-3.5, GPT-4, GPT-4o, Claude 2.1, Claude 3 Haiku, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Gemini Pro 1.5, Llama 3 70B Instruct). Spoiler: Anthropic's Claude 3+ models are by far the best at arithmetic, with even their smallest model (Claude 3 Haiku) exceeding the flagships of all other providers, including OpenAI's GPT-4o. However, the analysis also shows other providers how they can easily catch up: do what Anthropic does, tokenize integers right to left (R2L)!
