Ever heard of 'spatial intelligence'? I'm excited to share that I've been recruited by OpenWater Group to become a "founding ambassador" for their new invite-only wisdom network think tank! You can expect me to repost interesting insights from community members to help elevate their mission of fostering knowledge sharing and intellectual discourse. Open Water is a community of experience professionals willing to give back to young professionals to create collective success. Let me know if you're interested in joining. . Speaking of insightful content, Open Water's community is already producing thought-provoking analysis even in early ramp-up mode. I wanted to highlight this excellent Q&A with AI expert Daeil Kim who unpacks the recent AI announcements from OpenAI and Google. A few key takeaways from the article: -ChatGPT's low-latency multimodal model brings us closer to the conversational AI vision from "Her", while Google showcased their strengths in integrating AI across products. -These AI assistants open up new practical use cases like 24/7 personalized tutoring that understands our questions better through multimodal inputs. We can push the limits by making bold requests, like using the AI's computer vision to provide real-time coding instructions for replicating a website's design. -The next frontier is spatial intelligence to enable AI to learn from and operate in the physical world, paving the way for advanced humanoid robots. I encourage you to read Daeil's full insights and let me know what you think about the state of AI and its rapidly evolving capabilities. This is just the start of Open Water's mission to catalyze meaningful conversations and knowledge sharing!

For a long time, the only way to measure "Ease of Use" was to run UX tests. Now, in token-based governance, we can draw from Social Choice Theory and apply axiomatic proofs. It's a new route to validate voting designs and similar token-based mechanisms, and make sure participants know how to best achieve their goals. Read GovXS' latest article "Measuring Simplicity for Voters in Retro Funding" on how we approach UX by applying Social Choice theory. https://lnkd.in/eaaicf6s If you are interested in learning more, get in touch - and follow our work on Mirror!

I appreciate Reid Hoffman laying out the case for Silicon Valley in this election. “At a time when massive technological shifts are happening around the world, what the former Google C.E.O. Eric Schmidt calls America’s “innovation power” — our national capacity to create, leverage and propagate world-shaping technologies — will play a huge role in solidifying America’s global strength for decades, or even centuries, to come. In this moment, we need a leader who recognizes that innovation is the key to economic prosperity, national security and breakthrough progress on climate change and other pressing issues.” We need stable and predictable economic leadership that provides diverse founders the sandbox to innovate, creating solutions to our most urgent problems. We are capable of so much together.

I wrote about the new version of ChatGPT's voice assistant, GPT-4o, which can talk, laugh, interpret emotions and even sing. It's clearly modeled on Samantha from "Her," and it means that we are leaving the era of the dry, impersonal AI helper, and entering into much stranger territory. How will society change when AI voices can convince us they're human? Will we fall for our AI assistants, as Theodore does for Samantha? Or will other companies' more detached, less emotional chatbots carry the day? I wrote about the possibilities in The New York Times.

Rice Business and technology scholar Jaeyeon (Jae) Chung and a colleague put ChatGPT head to head against Google search to see how well each fared at helping people come up with ideas for a set of everyday creative tasks, such as making a toy from stuff you might have lying around the house. The AI won, thanks to its superior ability to make connections between seemingly unrelated things, Chung writes in The Conversation U.S. today. #ChatGPT #chatbot #chatbots #artificialintelligence #AI #Google #Googlesearch #Googling #creativity

It surprises me also the profound lack of interest of this domain while the big players quietly and step by step are fortifying their dominance. The interlude between AI and Identity is even more profound as identity, in the direct and broader sense, is the key to data both in terms of access to data spaces for development of AI and reliable and trustworthy data. Now what wallets are NOT about is payments, true you can even use it for payments as well but it is as well…

Not sure about this, AI is going to be prolific, everybody needs to get involved, be a user, be responsible. Can be likened to DEI and even ESG. At Qualcomm our CIO is working closely with legal and then it is the functions who are responsible in finding the tools that they need and then working with IT and legal to make it happen. While a final report is yet to be publicly posted, a version labeled “DRAFT Final Report, July 7, 2024” has been circulating, calling for the creation of new bureaucratic instruments. An International Scientific Panel on AI will produce annual reports on emerging areas of risk and governance gaps. Additionally, a new twice-year Policy Dialogue on AI governance will share best practices. The proposal includes a new UN capacity development network, an AI Standards Exchange, a global AI fund, and a global AI Data Framework. To manage the various boards and bodies, a New York-based AI office will be established. "Founder Mode" or sometimes coined "Founder Privilege" (a bit more condescending in tone imo) is getting some attention this week from the recent essay published by Paul Graham of Y Combinator. All interesting points and pushes. I have had front row seats to this mode as communications counsel. I have seen founders exit to give way for CEOs, and then return, as sometimes it can become clear -- there are things founders can do that CEO's (manager mode) can't. The debate if it should be either/or is still up for discussion - we have seen a spectrum of examples. At the end of the day, it is about assembling the right core leadership team and culture fit, complementary expertise, and open communication on all sides - so it doesn't have to be a win/lose dynamic. https://lnkd.in/gmJy_dHK

As Netflix recently released their latest viewership data for the 2nd half 2023 ('What We Watched' report), I've updated my previous chart to show the top performing #anime IP during this period Edit (5/30/2024): dates in image should actually read "July to December 2023" -- see comments for corrected version How we're defining 'Anime IP': - Source material for the title must've originated from a #manga (e.g. Naruto) or original anime film / TV production (e.g. Spirited Away; Cowboy Bebop) - So 'western anime' or 'anime-adjacent' titles aren't technically included (e.g. Avatar: TLA, Blue Eye Samurai.....but wait hear me out 😬) - Live-action titles are included, if the source material originated from a manga / original anime (e.g. One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho live-action series' are included) Here's some of what stood out, and how the top 10 changed from the previous 6-month period: 🏆 One Piece is a monster of a franchise! Totaling a staggering *1.02B* hours -- it dwarfs every other IP by a mile and was THE top performing anime IP in the report (+327% increase vs previous six-month period)... ☠ This includes viewership hours from the live-action One Piece adaptation (which was also Netflix's 2nd most popular title across the platform, at 541M hours viewed) 🤯 But even without the live-action numbers, you'd still end with a total ~464M hours viewed for One Piece (almost double the 2nd place IP, Naruto) 🥋 Baki the Grappler did extremely well compared to last period, at 235M hours and breaking into the top 3, vs just 59M previously and unranked (+299% growth) 🎯 Great showing by Hunter X Hunter as well, coming in at 186M hours viewed vs 89M last period (+109% increase) 👻 Jujutsu Kaisen domain-expanded their way to the top 10 at 102M hours, a superb showing given it was only available to <10% of Netflix subscribers globally! (it's amazing, go check it out...but beware internet spoilers) 💥 Yu-Yu Hakusho landed hot at 78M hours, due almost entirely to the success of the live action series (69M hours alone) 🧟♂️ Zom 100 rounded out the top 10 at 74M hours and, like YYH, was one of the only IP that actually had a better performing live-action than anime (the live-action film boasted 46M hours vs 28M for the anime series) Other shifts: 🍜 Naruto (incl. Boruto): 283M hours -> 262M hours (-8% decrease) 🌊 Demon Slayer: 187M -> 158M hours (-16% decrease) ⚔ Seven Deadly Sins: 119M -> 115M hours (-4% decrease) 📽 Studio Ghibli: 89M -> 80M hours (-10% decrease) Other highlights: ⚡ Pokemon is unique and though technically originated as a gaming IP, deserves a shout out on this list as it would've taken the 4th spot at 222M total hours viewed 💨 Avatar: TLA (incl. Korra) and Blue-Eye Samurai (excellent show btw) are considered western anime IPs but performed really well and so also deserve shout outs (at 140M and 74M hours viewed, respectively)

#PublicAI is the antidote to the high-stakes AI arms race that’s become a billionaire’s playground. In a month when OpenAI just pulled in one of the largest funding rounds ever—cementing its turning point from altruistic nonprofit to Silicon Valley heavyweight—it’s become clear that profit has replaced the original promise. Mozilla Foundation sees this transition as a reminder of what’s lost when big money takes the wheel: civic-minded missions replaced by corporate ambitions. That’s why Mozilla is putting its weight behind Public AI—a fresh, rebellious concept designed to bring AI back to the people. https://lnkd.in/dbrxGERA

Looking forward to discussing how changing demographics and culture norms are affecting investment opportunities in longevity, health and well-being at The Care Summit today Alongside Cake Ventures' Monique Woodard, Ziegler's Dan Hermann, Oak HC/FT's Billy Deitch and JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s Jennifer Edwards, we’ll dive into the trends shaping how we are investing in the space: - Last year marked one of the most significant social and economic moments in modern times: The number of older adults—those aged 50 and over- surpassed the number of children under the age of 15 for the first time. - In 2020 the 50 plus population contributed $45 trillion to global GDP, or 34% of the total. That equates to about 3x the revenue of the world’s 100 highest- earning companies in 2020. - The U.S. population grew by 24.5 million from 2010 to 2022, and Hispanics accounted for 53% of this increase – a greater share than any other racial or ethnic group. - Women around the world and across all ages drive 64% of consumer spending

Recent Stanford research highlights a critical issue in AI development: most language models struggle with non-English languages. This is a limitation that could exacerbate technological and economic disparities worldwide. With English comprising over 60% of online content despite being spoken by only 5% of the global population, efforts are underway to develop AI for underrepresented languages. Great to read some of the efforts in The New York Times. https://lnkd.in/ehbSMYsd #AI #Language #LanguageDiversity #TechEquality #LanguageGap

🌏 📊 Erica Kangas is an engineering leader, voracious learner, and feminist builder who seeks out the biggest levers to move the world. 📊🌏 It's W6 / Q2 / 2024 and this week in our MGMT Boston up & coming operator series we’ve got Annie Erica, part of a small but mighty team as the Head of Engineering at hyper curated investment connection & fundraising guidance platform Scroobious. Erica joined Scroobious as their Head of Engineering to help lead the technical efforts of this very early stage team shaping up capital markets culture for underrepresented founders. Erica is responsible for the entirety of their technical infrastructure. She is working every day to build out their marketplace product, making sure Scroobious Founders are having a smooth experience so they can effectively onboard their pitches onto the marketplace and connect with investors. Erica continues to spend time answering tough questions about the business and communicating effectively to equip founders with the resources they need to be successful. Scroobious’ founder community grew 75% in 2023 and is made up of 63% female founders. ✍ Cataloging Skills & Connecting the Dots 🔄 From nonprofits to startups, Erica has always cataloged her experiences. She keeps references & resources on hand from prior experiences to keep memorable frameworks from the earliest days of her career. Every time she embarks on a meaty project, the first question she asks is “what are our goals”? Then, what are we looking to accomplish? By having something to ground herself in, she can begin to move forward. That work has paid off in building a portfolio of experiences and an archive of resources. At Scroobious, she wants to understand the different attributes of founders and successful pitches to effectively connect founders with angels. For example, investors look for coachability as an attribute & trait, so she has thought back to her nonprofit days when they measured grit and growth in students and volunteers. It’s obviously a bit different but there are always overlapping threads to pull on. Problems Not Yet Solved Erica offered up three unsolved problems that drive her work as an invitation to think about and join in tackling these issues. Because learning never ends and we have a lot more to do in these areas! 🤖 How do we build AI that won’t just repeat the mistakes and mirror the worst facets of our past? 🤝 How do we continue to develop the field of software engineering such that it is sustainable, equitable, and accessible? 🤲 How do we effectively combat exclusionary systems when many of our institutions no longer have the appetite or have their hands tied from doing so? If you’d like to learn more about Erica’s career, the full post is linked in the comments. Go ahead and sign up for the newsletter to see the operator learnings we bring you in the weeks ahead too, will ya? #bostontech #operators #engineering

What a difference a dozen years make! In 2012, we created and launched the White House Presidential Innovation Fellows (PIF) program. We could barely imagine at that time the extent and rapidity of the progress that was about to occur in machine learning and related fields. But we believed deeply that having a pathway for getting technologists into high-impact public service mattered. Yesterday, as part of President Biden's AI Talent Surge, the US Government announced a new PIF cohort consisting exclusively of leading AI experts to help ensure that eight key departments -- Justice, State, OMB, DoD, and more -- responsibly develop and use AI tools in order to effectively achieve their missions on behalf of the American people. Just as every organization became a tech organization in recent decades, so too will they need to graft AI onto their DNA in order to meet the rising expectations of the public. I'm heartened that these AI PIFs answered the call and will now use their diverse backgrounds and invaluable experiences in data, systems design, governance, equity, and security to make sure that AI works for everyone. We're squarely in the middle of election season, and the spread of disinformation -- whether that is simply fringe theories or more sophisticated deepfakes -- will continue to perpetuate across media platforms. This can surface even more in the wake of major events, such as what happened this week. Both media platforms (including LinkedIn) as well as technology companies creating AI tools (including Microsoft), have a responsibility to help mitigate and stop the spread of false or misleading information. I'll continue to share what Microsoft is doing from the awareness, education and technology solution standpoint, as well as the direct outreach we're doing with Campaigns, in the National Conventions, and with key political organizations and influencer groups. You'll likely continue to see more of these posts from me, but the fight against false and misleading information is far too important to stay quiet. https://lnkd.in/dFWjXxM9 Microsoft #elections

AI has entered the boardroom. From AI bots to predictive AI platforms, AI is helping to provide real-time insights, guide discussions, and inform decisions during board meetings. Madrona Managing Director and Clari Board Member Steve Singh: "It's crazy for a board to still get updates every 90 days with PDFs when predictive AI can spot a revenue issue two weeks into a quarter." He continued: "Soon with generative AI, agents will be working on the board's behalf, prodding a company's revenue leaders. The board will add a permanent layer of analytical value to the organization."
