Dysfunctional Board An interesting discussion in the course material provided by Institute of Directors (IOD), India. It starts with description of dysfunctional environment and elaborating on how this manifests behaviourally. 1. Lack of confidentiality - Compromising confidentiality of the discussions. 2. Conflicting Agendas - Difficulty in conversing on a decision. Missing alignment with the organisational agenda. 3. Lack of order - Jumping topics, meeting within meeting, islands of conversation. 4. Lack of Respect - Old Vs New member, ageism, gender based, biases 5. Hostile environment - Personal attacks 6. Secret meetings - in-group Vs Out-group 7. Personal & Political agenda 8. Lack of Trust - Missing mutual trust and psychological safety 9. Dominating members - Might is right. The loudest wins, harassment etc 10. Non -participation - Quiet ones or switched off directors. Don't we see the same in working teams, verticals, leadership teams. Earlier in the career, we get the behaviours sorted out , better are the chances of #board behaviour. Embracing Positive Deviance: The Key to Unconventional Success What do Michael Jordan, Rosa Parks, Zappos, Lady Gaga, and families with healthy children in West Bengal India all have in common? Positive deviance. They’ve all done or are doing something that puts them at the far right end of the “bell curve” of normal distribution. It makes them “deviant.” While that word has usually been associated with negative behavior, it doesn’t have to be. Deviant comes from two Latin words. “De” means “from” and “Via” means “Road.” Deviate means “off the beaten path.” People that demonstrate unconventional or uncommon behavior can be called positive deviants. I kind of like the term myself, and consider myself part of that group. Do you? People who depart from the norm, walk to the beat of a different drum, think outside the box, go with their gut, and otherwise step off the path of how everyone else is doing things around here ought to be watched. (And perhaps even imitated.) What are they doing right? What makes them more successful? Where does their bold, brave, high performance come from? They make different choices. 𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲? 🌟 The Book '15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership' profoundly influenced me. One commitment that stood out to me is '𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆.' Early in my career, I thought leaders should have all answers. This approach was exhausting. Soon I realised 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, guides us through 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆, making every situation a treasure hunt for knowledge. Here's how I applied it: 1️⃣ 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: I started asking my team thought-provoking questions. 2️⃣ 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆: I became comfortable not having all the answers. 3️⃣ 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: I modeled curiosity, encouraging my team to take risks.
