🚀For the first time, Growth Capital and Italian Tech Alliance presented their quarterly VC report in #Florence! Many thanks to Open Seed for hosting the presentation at the charming venue of #ViolaPark. 🌱In recent years, VC in #Tuscany has seen a significant upsurge. Academic research initiatives and high engagement from #BusinessAngels continue to push the region forward in the VC ecosystem. ⚙️In the first quarter of 2024 alone, Tuscany exceeded its fundraising performance for the entirety of 2023. Last year, the region saw a total investment of €27 million. In comparison, an impressive €103 million was raised in Q1-24, coming primarily from Medical Microinstruments, Inc.'s #megaround. This Tuscan startup stands at the forefront of innovation in robotic surgical systems and has received substantial international interest. Here’s why I don’t believe in VC Funding, at least here in Italy! 👇 I know it may sound harsh, but hear me out: The entrepreneurship model is totally missing. When we built intranet.ai many years ago, we had some great ideas and an already developed product, but we weren’t yet live on the market. So, we started looking for investors. When you ask a VC to fundraise your project, the first thing they’ll do is ask for guarantees. Guarantees in a seed stage? What? How do you ensure that you can make it when — even if you have all the skills and good ideas — you don’t know how the project will turn out? Truth is, that many Italians wannabe VC act more like a bank. It’s not an investment they’re making, but rather lending you money. And quite frankly they don’t necessarily believe in you nor your project. That’s why we decided to steer away from funding models and followed our guts.
