We need to distinguish between two different types of "neutrality". The first type of neutrality refers to freedom from personal/cultural biases. Proper science should be "neutral" in the sense of being reality-based and free from such biases (in particular confirmation bias). Therefore, science must remain an end in itself, it is not to be instrumentalized for private ends, not to be subordinated to unscientific ideologies, because when it does, it loses its independence, effectiveness and credibility - the distinction between proper science and pseudoscience becomes blurred. This is exactly what we saw happen with smoking-related health risks and what we are seeing now with climate skepticism. The second type of neutrality refers to the idea of genuine human progress and a thriving human civilization. Science is not supposed to be "neutral" in a sense of being free from foundational values such as human progress and survival. Science, technology and markets are societal concepts that are supposed to advance and promote civilizational progress and serve the common good, to promote - not diminish - the quality of life, freedom and justice, aesthetics and ethics; and the full realization of the human potential. The purpose of science is not simply limited to an unbiased search for truth, but its role also includes informing human societies how to best regulate technology and markets so that they promote societal welfare rather than destroy it. Normally, in a functioning society, scientists are not supposed to become activists, because the don't need to. When they discover that humanity is on an unsustainable, self-destructive development path, they normally would convey this critical insight to human societies, policy makers and civil society. It would then be the society's job to adequately respond to this information by adjusting its development trajectory so that it becomes less self-destructive and more sustainable. But when this response fails, e.g. because of fossil fuel capture and misinformation resulting in a widespread collective delusion, in pseudoscientific denial and utter lack of situational awareness, scientists find themselves in a terrible situation: They are among the few who can see an existential danger and humanity's insufficient response for what they really are. Because of society's refusal to take a serious warning seriously, they are forced to become activists for scientific truth.

For carbon removal the 2020s is about figuring out what works. What is most scaleable, sustainable, cheapest, least resource intensive thing we can do to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. The CDR startup Running Tide is now laying off all staff. They piloted an approach where macro-algae captures CO2 and then sinks into the deep ocean. They raised $50 million and was one of the most well-known CDR companies so it is a big deal. Although the lack of a buyers certainly played a role, it seems like the removal method didn’t perform as anticipated as they pivoted to sinking biomass instead. As in all new industries, the majority of the early players will cease to exist. Many other shutdowns will be announced by big and small CDR startups in the coming years. Due to consolidation effects that would happen even if there were plenty of carbon credit buyers. The US had over 1000 car manufactures 110 years ago, three of them remains. What we truly want to avoid is leaving promising methods untested. We do not want the tragedy of dusty patents with world changing ideas stuck in a drawer or with founders that never got to raise money. Was macro-algae as a CDR solution properly tested by Running Tide? Maybe, I don't know. I hope that they will publish their data, enhancing the knowledge of how well the method worked. Startups, early buyers, and venture capitalists play an outsized role in making sure that promising ideas get the chance to be properly tried out. We will not reach scale without governments financing CDR outright, or forcing companies to buy it. But without the trailblazing brave founders like Running Tides Marty Odlin and the people willing to fund such endeavours we will never uncover the most effective carbon removal solutions. My condolences to the Running Tide team, thank you for your hard work in advancing CDR. I highly recommend this interview. I really appreciate your perspective and thoughts on this difficult subject, Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. Thank you for your work. You did an amazing job helping the interviewer reflect on his own reluctance to change- which I believe most of us struggle with. I also appreciated your focus on the importance of community, being responsible to each other, and how the results of our actions or inactions today will impact children and future generations. Here's one excerpt that resonated with me: "We know how to transition to renewable energy. We know how to insulate buildings. We know how to put reflective roofs on buildings. We know how to improve public transit. We know how to shift our transportation toward electric. We know how to avoid food waste. We know how to reduce our consumption. There’s a million things we could do. It’s just a matter of shifting the status quo, building the political will, shifting the culture in order to make all of these things happen as quickly as possible. Shocking statistic: 92% of all persistently impoverished communities are served by co-ops. 🤯 With 110 on bill financing programs around the country (mostly run by co-ops), the barriers have never been lower to reduce bills. So why are these communities still suffering? Barriers: Accessibility. Education. Capital. Accessibility: Going through an energy audit, sourcing and hosting 3-5 contractors, and filling out loan applications with little support is HARD. Even tougher to go through this process with confidence.... Education: Expertise is hard to come by in co-op territories and delivering it is expensive! Capital: Many on-bill programs still have credit checks, lengthy bill payment criteria, and small loan funds. In other words, to be successful these programs MUST: 1) Reduce the time intensity 2) Educate homeowners -- get them excited to move forward with confidence! 3) Lighter capital requirements and raise bigger loan funds Is there something else that I've missed? Now that we have a president elect, I am being asked what I think a new administration will mean for the sustainability movement. This is my opinion: we should watch what is happening in California. If the challenges there are approved by the court, https://lnkd.in/ey3MbBiC then demand for sustainability slows, not because it's not the right thing to do, but due to companies not pushing down through their supply chains for disclosures on where their providers are on sustainability. If the challenges in California are not approved, then it is full steam ahead. And other States will follow (see below). Nothing the new administration does will impact reporting disclosure requirements. Yes, there may be a roll back of Biden policies and yes, we may continue to burn fossil fuels, but all that will need to be included in disclosure requirements. We are a country of 50 States and the States will prevail. Per AI: Several U.S. states are considering or have implemented greenhouse gas (GHG) disclosure requirements similar to California's. Notably: New York: Legislators are deliberating bills that would mandate companies to report their GHG emissions and climate-related financial risks. These proposals aim to enhance transparency and align with broader climate objectives. source: Bloomberg Law Minnesota: In 2023, Minnesota enacted the Commerce Omnibus Finance Bill (SF 2744), which requires banks and credit unions with assets exceeding $1 billion to submit annual climate risk surveys to the Commissioner of Revenue, starting July 30. source: Bloomberg Law Washington: The state is advancing legislation mirroring California's SB 253, necessitating companies with over $1 billion in annual revenue to report Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2026 and Scope 3 emissions in 2027. Hope everyone is doing okay. We know IRA with climate tech funding is going to get impacted under the new administration. Can you help me find folks in Climate Tech or people with climate tech research backgrounds or friends? If you are one or know of scientists working on climate tech research, please share this with them. My company is looking to donate our donation to fund a climate tech research project. This will be the 7th year we have done this. We are not in climate tech industry. We're a private software company donating from our own profits. We don't have industry contacts or any commercial interest in this. we’re looking for: * early enough that $50k can make a difference. Pre NSF Grant stage. Kind of like pre-seed in tech * researching new technology that relates to carbon capture or carbon reduction (not social science or political science or advocacy or planting tree) * ideally something that creates something commercially viable so that if it works out the market will take it from there * research projects at US universities have been what we've historically donated * application deadline is in a couple weeks 11/20. Friday (a bit late) Fun with Water. A solid overview of the 10th Water Forum. Although I am somewhat skeptical of "high level" discussions on water and its relationship to critical resources such as food and ecosystems the author concisely conveys the issues at hand. This high-level event's core theme is systemic water management, which underscores the "urgent need for an integrated approach that leverages the synergies between water and associated policies within the current climate context. Water, energy, and food security, bolstered by healthy ecosystems, are more essential than ever for sustainable long-term economic growth and human well-being. However, he pointed out a significant barrier: the lack of policy coherence among the water, food, energy, and environmental sectors." If this research proves true and trees are actually sequestering methane in addition to CO2 at a globally significant scale, the importance of crediting programs that prevent deforestation and accelerate reforestation, in the right places, has just grown exponentially.

🤜 The path to gigaton scale: insights from CDR’s Top 100 companies 📑 XPRIZE just released their “Getting to Gigatonne Report” which is an analysis of the Top 100 Teams who made it to the finals of their competition. 🌎 In case you’re not familiar, the $100M XPRIZE Carbon Removal is the Oscar of CDR: supported by the MUSK FOUNDATION, it challenged Teams from around the world to remove 1,000 net metric tonnes, or one kilotonne, of CO2 from the air or ocean over a one year demonstration period. 🏆 While over 1,300 Teams from 88 countries took on the challenge, after 3 hard years of work and several rounds of judging, we are now at the final Top 100 most promising carbon removal innovators. The final winners of the prize will be announced in Spring 2025. 🤓 Be sure to check out the report for some really interesting insights, https://lnkd.in/d2K5yR4F, but I’ve pulled out a few of my favourites: 🇺🇲 The US dominates with 45/100 teams. 🌲 The Top 100 Teams project that they will cumulatively remove a total of 802,979 net tonnes of CO2 in 2024 with over half 57% of this being from ‘land-based’ companies (456,017).   🤑 Over half of the Top 100 Teams (51) have sold credits, totalling nearly 5M tonnes sold (4.975M). Yet only 120,207 tonnes have been delivered to date. 📊 Across the Top 100 cohort, the average price for 2024 credit sales was $417/tonne (median  $290/tonne) with AIR being highest and LAND lowest. 💰 More than half (52%) have raised more than $5M USD, with 8 Teams having raised more than $50M. The Air Teams have a larger median capital amount raised. 🚀 Collectively, the Top 100 Teams project removing 788 million tonnes (megatonnes) per year by 2030. Air Teams represent the largest portion of this at 403 megatonnes, followed by Land at 194 megatonnes and Oceans at 176 megatonnes. 🤯 What stands out most to me is the sheer quality, diversity, and ambition of these 100 finalists. Just a few years ago, you would have struggled to find 50 CDR companies. Now XPRIZE had over 1,300 to chose from across dozens of different removal pathways. We will need many shots on target to achieve gigaton scale, and this report makes me hopefully it can be done! 👏 Shout-out to authors Nikki Batchelor, Michael Leitch, Laura E. 🌎 California's second carbon market auction of the year has raised significant revenue at a critical time for climate funds! 💰🌿 The latest Western Climate Initiative auction results show continued demand for allowances and confidence in the program's stability. This auction is expected to generate approximately $1.1 Billion for the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF), which funds initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building climate resilience. 🌱🚉 📈 Key Highlights: - All 51,589,488 current vintage allowances were purchased, marking the 15th consecutive sold-out auction. - The current auction settled at $37.02, significantly above the $24.04 price floor. - All 7,211,000 future vintage allowances offered were sold, settling at $38.35. 💼🌟 Over the past decade, investments from the GGRF have reduced California's emissions by 109.2 million metric tons—equivalent to removing 80% of the state's gas cars from the road! These funds have supported zero-emissions transport, affordable housing, and other critical projects. 🔥 As California faces another summer with heightened wildfire risks and evident climate change impacts, the importance of the GGRF is clearer than ever.
