Juniper Square recently released their look back at the state of venture in Q2 2024, and the data is interesting. 👉 The liquidity drought continues to stifle fundraising, with $37.4B committed to 255 funds YTD. 👉 In the current climate, established managers are securing 77% of fund value YTD, the highest concentration in the last decade.  👉 Over 63% of capital raised in 2024 so far is in funds of $500M+, the second-highest percentage in the last decade. 👉 Q2 reflects an uptick in US venture deal momentum, with quarterly deal count climbing to the highest level since Q2 2022. 👉 Q2 data shows a third consecutive upward quarter in both exit value and the total number of exits.  👉 Q2 hit a 9-quarter high in total number of exits, and the total exit value recorded was the second-best quarter since Q1 2022. The data shows that the landscape is especially competitive for emerging managers. When it comes to generating returns though, a fresh perspective can help find the most interesting deals. Earlier this week Texture, led by CEO & co-founder Sanjiv Sanghavi, announced its $7.5m seed round of fundraising with participation from Abstract Ventures, Day One Ventures, Equal Ventures, Lerer Hippeau, and a handful of angels. Dorothy Chang and I feel fortunate to count ourselves among the “handful of angels.” We didn’t invest just because Sanjiv is a close friend - though knowing him for over a decade has given us a lot of insight into his mind and how he operates. We invested for a lot of the typical reasons a VC would: Solving big problems with big potential returns - Venture investments only make sense if they have the chance to make massive returns. Texture is building the data infrastructure for energy networks - becoming a common data collection and sharing platform for every player in the energy grid, no matter the type of energy. There is already a huge gaping problem and a huge market here. Building for an inevitable future - On a macro level, as a society, we are moving more and more toward complex, interconnected energy sources as we optimize for the right balance of efficiency, sustainability and costs. Unique insight and founder-market fit - At a first glance, Texture seems like a big departure from what we originally knew Sanjiv from, as a Co-Founder of ClassPass. I’m thrilled to be announcing that Notion Capital is leading the $15m Series A investment in Cogna today. In the industry, we like to think that software has been eating the world. But when you look at the data a better description would be more of a nibble. Depending on what source you look at the software industry represents between 5-8% of global GDP. Contrast that with the services industry that represents between 60-70% of GDP and worth around $25 trillion on a global basis. Most services have been out of reach for the software industry. They have either been too complex or too specialized for off the shelf software to access in any economically viable way. But that’s beginnning to change with GenAI leading to the emergence of ‘service as a software.’ Cogna is at the forefront of this opportunity - building precision software at scale and delivering huge productivity gains for traditional industries. Friends, Q2 was a quarter of progress and learning for us at HawkTower, where we invest in early-stage startups applying breakthrough computing technologies to maximize California's natural resource markets. Our focus is on technology-enabled interventions (e.g., AI-enabled geospatial radars for lithium-ion batteries in the waste stream) for critical, market-level imperatives (e.g., disaster prevention) that can drive rapid commercial adoption (e.g., placed on every recycling truck in the world). The robots are coming.....for the pick and pack jobs. Congratulations to the founders of Covariant , a University of California, Berkeley -based robotics startup, who were recently acquihired by Amazon. This move may signal a significant shift in warehouse automation. It will be fascinating to observe how politicians, economists, and the media "adjust" their narratives about job creation and its impact on the economy and stock market over the coming years. Remember, the monthly job report can swing the stock market several percentage points in either direction, as we saw last Friday (September 6th).
