If I ever learned a great deal about programming principles from any single person, it’s from Uncle Bob (Robert Martin), the author of the famous book Clean Code! I consider myself lucky to have attended some of his live virtual sessions and to have had the chance to ask him questions directly (conducted by O'Reilly - Clean Coders on Design Patterns, SOLID Principles, Advanced Test-Driven Development etc.). For anyone looking to get a quick summary of the key takeaways from his best book 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲, I found the following post by Mayank Ahuja to be very insightful. In the early days of the internet, the W3C and few other organizations helped build the first Internet Standards so that the Web could foster it's own innovation & growth. Fast forward 30 years, I cannot believe we needed a law to get browsers and websites to agree on protecting your privacy by default... The internet should really be decentralized, and customer centrist by design. How did we ended up here?

Layoffs in Big Tech - it may not be what you think. Over the past two years, as major tech companies have gone through rounds of layoffs, the narrative in the media has often framed these actions as “downsizing” — a necessary trimming of the workforce in response to economic pressures. But, in many cases, that’s not what’s really been happening. While headlines have suggested that these layoffs are a sign of companies getting leaner, a closer look reveals a different strategy at play. Many companies have been quietly shifting jobs, not eliminating them. Offices have been opened in countries where labor is less expensive, and new teams have been trained over the past few years or more. When the time was right, these companies laid off some higher-cost employees in the West. It’s a kind of internal outsourcing: the work remains within a company but moves to locations with cheaper labor. So, when we talk about “downsizing,” we’re often missing the bigger picture. For every job cut in the West, there may be several new hires elsewhere. The total headcount might not decrease at all — in fact, it might even grow. What’s really happening is a global shift in the distribution of talent, not a reduction in overall workforce size. I recently came across a post claiming that we’re losing jobs to AI, but that’s not quite accurate either. To my knowledge, AI hasn’t really had a significant impact on tech layoffs. We are still in a phase reminiscent of what we saw 20 years ago when outsourcing seemed like a brilliant cost-saving strategy. Back then, companies moved jobs overseas in search of cheaper labor, only to later realize the downsides — from quality control issues to cultural and communication barriers. Today, we’re seeing a similar trend, only it’s happening internally, within companies, rather than through third-party outsourcing firms. This isn’t to say there aren’t a great many talented engineers outside the West — there certainly are. But it’s important to remember that an engineer’s value doesn’t just come from the ability to write code. Skills like understanding the cultural context of a market, having a history of innovation, and being able to work closely with product teams to drive strategic goals are all critical — and not all of these can be easily replicated or replaced. There’s a difference between being busy and being productive, and it’s a distinction that companies often rediscover the hard way. So, while the media may continue to report on layoffs as a simple story of companies trimming their sails, it’s worth looking beneath the surface. The reality is more complex. What looks like downsizing might actually be a strategic shift in where and how work is done — one that comes with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. And as always, time will tell how effective these strategies really are. But I don't believe most of those newer branches/offices are likely to go away, because there are good engineers outside of the west.

This is definitely introduce trust issue with the app. Changing more based on traffic surge or demand make sense but not because a user perceived to be able to pay more because he is using iPhone vs Android. What is next ... pricing based on user with iPhone 10 pay less than user with iPhone 16??

I conquered an enemy today. These were the words my daughter said happily when I picked her up from the school bus. When I asked her the details, she said she had an open conversation with Anirudh, and they both are friends now. I was curious about that open conversation and asked for the full story. She said, I asked Anirudh for the reason for hating me. He was uncomfortable initially, as I asked straight. He thought for a while and said there was no specific reason. I told him, If there is no reason, let’s be friends, and extended my hand for friendship. She continued saying to me. He was not comfortable for the entire day, mama. After our talk, he sat with his friends and didn’t sit with me yesterday. Today he sat with me and spoke with me very friendly. The fight between my daughter and Anirudh has been for one year. There were times she didn’t go to the canteen because of this boy. She was worried at the start of the year, because they were both in the same section. At the start of the month, she said to me, they are both bench mates this month. She was concerned about that. I was amused after listening to my daughter. Making that boy comfortable and building a friendship was a big win for her. It really made me think, why don’t we elderly think this way ? There was a time in my career where I thought of having these kinds of conversations. But I was not courageous to initiate. The only thing I did was, I moved out of that project.I was simply a coward. I strongly recommend these open conversations if there is any difficult situation. If we do not have open conversations and resolve them, those will be carried forward and will blast one fine day. It is courageous to initiate these conversations. You may look an outlier in the group. That’s OK. It may take some time for the other person to settle down. That is also OK. Why are ESOPs/RSUs still undervalued? While the appraisal cycle is going on, I have been part of multiple appraisal cycles and have been doing it for years. Some want more cash compensation, some want more bonuses or corrections or promotions. Since I have always been part of private companies, I can share that experience. I have never witnessed any employee asking for more ESOPs. It must be the same for RSUs. Though I understand that the cash increment helps you maintain your daily lives, ESOPs are the ones, which will define your future. It is a major wealth creator for the middle class. From my personal experience, ESOPs are a must for any negotiation during the appraisal cycle. Many young folks don't realise the power of it. I have also seen people want more cash in exchange for it. In fact, in each appraisal cycle, you should ask for more credits in your ESOPs or RSU whichever is applicable. Its a sort of an investment. Never lose such opportunities. Not all startups succeed, but the one that can, will change your fortune forever. It's coming straight from a middle-class boy, where it played a significant role. To those in my network who are embarking on new ventures or seeking investor backing—how often have you been asked to frame your vision in terms of what's already established, or adjacent to existing ideas? It can be disheartening for those striving for moonshots or innovation, knowing that misunderstanding is almost guaranteed during the product-market fit journey to secure that first investment. And I'm a believer in pair programming. Sometimes I hear the argument that pair programming is not as efficient as individuals working on code. On my current team we rarely find ourselves waiting on other people or spending time in meetings. If you consider the team from a system perspective, I think it is quite efficient.

FYI - This post was inspired by multiple folks I've known over the years who found themselves in a similar situation. It is not referring to any specific person. --- Once upon a time, there was a skilled engineer with more than a decade of experience. This person had deep product and industry knowledge, a brain full of secrets, and probably a Jenkins job or two that no one else dared to touch. They were the kind of engineer who knew which server would crash first on a Monday morning and had a sixth sense for which bug fix was about to become a five-alarm fire. But one day, they made a mistake. A big one. They moved into management. Now, this didn’t seem like a mistake at first. Companies always need technical folks leading teams of skilled engineers. Someone who speaks the language of code AND corporate synergy? Perfect, right? Wrong. It was a mistake when layoffs came around, and the powers-that-be (a.k.a planners of budgets and makers of hard decisions when projected funds aren't heading in the right direction) decided there were a few too many managers. Suddenly, all the skills this person had before seemed to vanish like donuts in the break room. Not because they actually disappeared, but because somewhere between spread sheets, HR software, and annual budget planning those skills got filed away in the "forgotten" drawer. It was as if moving into management rendered all their technical knowledge invisible. Poof! A decade of experience reduced to a line item on a spreadsheet. Now, they were just another headcount in a role that there were apparently “a few too many” of. And just like that… bye-bye. Off they went. Of course, the skilled engineer landed another job and moved on. But it does make you wonder: why do we treat people like chess pieces?  I mean, it’s like the layoff logic goes, “Well, he’s a bishop now, and we don’t need three bishops.” But hold up—he used to be a castle! And he can still do all the castle moves! In fact, if he can do the bishop moves AND the castle moves, doesn’t that make him, figuratively speaking, a queen? Not one bishop too many, but one of the most valuable pieces on the board? So, here’s to all the engineers-turned-managers who got treated like pawns in a game where no one remembers you can move in more than one direction. May your skills—and your sanity—always find a company smart enough to know you’re not just a piece on the board. 😎

Lots of folks wonder about PM culture at Amazon / AWS. Here are some tidbits. This is probably the best place to innovate. 1. High agency, you own the P&L. You run the business. You decide what to build and bring others on your journey. 2. Debate everyday. Which direction, what and where to invest, and why? There are smart people all around you, leverage them. 3. Highly autonomous engineering - you don’t baby sit or get involved in DSMs or planning poker. You can, but since we are all customer obsessed we all know what’s important to deliver. 4. When in doubt, we resort to customer impact. There’s your truth. Dive deep. 5. Accountability - assume Onwership, Be right a lot, Insist on the highest standards and Execute. 6. We measure everything. And improve. Startups can literally do the above and ensure success towards achieving PMF. It’s starts with hiring the right people and building this culture. Happy building. NYC Meal Pack for 9/11 Day (mealsofhope.org) is an volunteering engagement for 2 hours. As you head towards the packaging area, you are in a sea of humanity. Half the crowd heading out after completing their shift and the other half heading in. The teams are assigned a table and instructed on the various tasks to be performed. It is a mini assembly line which completes packaging an meal packet. As minutes tick by, you raise your head to take a look around. You observe various teams huddled around tables cranking out meal packages. All activities in unison. A bell rung at an table signifies a box is complete. The "I" sees the "We" in action. Actions for the same purpose. The purpose is advancing the (same) goal. During those two hours you are not thinking about commonality or differences. Not about comfort or discomfort. Your focus is on your action. Actions guided by purpose. As progress is made, a warm feeling of content starts building up. There is no sense of success v failure. It is simply about degree of accomplishment. This small experience shapes a powerful mindset which can be applied to other areas. As the saying goes, if you feel stuck, change your perspective. Giving is an opportunity. I feel lucky that I got a chance to be with like-minded individuals again this year.
