Meet SA-ers | WAN Võ - Vol 23 Hey folks! I’m WAN, currently holding the title of Assistant Manager at SHIFT ASIA. In the wild world of IT outsourcing at SHIFT ASIA, my daily gig mostly involves diving headfirst into projects that I manage to solve pesky technical requests from our clients. Picture this: I clock in, do the attendance cha-cha, and then take a break…like a caffeinated sloth. And then, I double-check all the tasks—just in case there is a last minute hidden-surprise. You know, the usual office shenanigans! Colleagues always fuel my energy and spark my creativity. They're such young, dynamic, and incredibly talented folks. Every two weeks, like clockwork, we gather for an internal mini show. We start with the boring-but-necessary- part like company updates, department announcements - the usual stuff – and then the main performance. Each team member gets a moment in the spotlight to spill the beans about what’s been tickling their fancy lately. From hobbies to life experiences, it’s like a surprise grab bag of intriguing content. And let me tell you, those sessions are my jam - I absolutely love them! But wait, there’s more! Outside of the daily grind, I secretly moonlight as a proud member of our company’s soccer club, where I trade emails for goals! Since we’re still rocking the hybrid work-from-home setup, our club hasn’t had many chances to meet up and kick the ball. However, every weekend, we transform. We hit the field, sprint, play soccer, and unleash primal yells. It’s like stress relief meets team bonding. Plus, it’s a chance to get up close and personal with colleagues from various departments, all working on different projects. Stop Using the Word "Simple"! 🙅‍♂️💻 =======================  As a freelance programmer, web developer, mobile app developer, and software developer in Singapore for longer than I'd care to admit 😅, there's one word that makes me cringe every time a client says it: "Simple." 🤯 It usually goes like this: Client: "I need a simple app. Just a simple feature that does [insert complex list involving AI, real-time data processing, and integration with multiple platforms]. It should be simple, right?" Me (internally): "Ah yes, as simple as walking to the moon. Should be done by lunchtime." 🚀🍵 I get it. You say "simple" to make your requirements sound easy, but here’s the truth: Simple is rarely simple. A Funny Story 🤔 Not long ago, a client approached me with a "simple" request for a mobile app. Their list included: 1. User login with Facebook, Google, and LinkedIn (why not throw in MySpace while we're at it? 😂). 2. Payment integration with 3 gateways because more is better, right? 3. Real-time notifications—because what's an app without instant updates? 4. A backend dashboard that generates automatic reports like a crystal ball predicting the future. 📈🔮 But of course, they wanted it in 2 weeks. Just a quick CTRL+C, CTRL+V from the internet, right? 😅 Why "Simple" is Not So Simple 🧩 1. Feature Creep: Adding a "simple" button? It’s not just a button. It might require changes to the database, backend, user interface, and testing—lots of testing. 2. Integration Challenges: You want this "simple" feature to sync with your existing systems? It’s like fitting a square peg in a round hole. And yes, making that fit takes coding magic (and patience). 3. Scalability Issues: Today, you want a "simple" app for 10 users. Tomorrow, it needs to handle 10,000 users. Planning for this isn’t simple—it requires a robust foundation from the start. Let’s Redefine "Simple" 💡 Instead of saying "simple," let’s call it "straightforward" or "clear in concept." Acknowledge the thought and effort required to bring your ideas to life. It's like calling Nasi Lemak a simple rice dish.
