Disclaimer: by no means I advocate abandoning JDK platform – I think JDK platform and ecosystem is very productive and robust modern platform that should be widely adopted. Rant: I have been enjoying development with Kotlin for the past 5 years and I recently attended SeaJUG meeting where Java dev advocate Billy Korando of ORACLE was presenting on new features in Java and JDK 23. Billy is a good presenter and I feel bad for him: he has to cheerfully present the sad state of Java (language) development. I think Java stewards just stuck in the past and do not get it! WTF they spend time adding useless features: Jwebserver – why spend any time on something that cannot be used for any real work – the excuse is that some professors and students are too stupid to use tomcat or jetty; Single File Source Code – another useless feature, the script cannot pull libraries and integrate with my corporate private repository of artifacts, or even public ones I think that Java leadership just do not get it: to succeed Java ecosystem MUST embrace build toolchain and code repositories. IMO it should adopt Maven because of its simplicity and declarative nature (it could sure benefit from simplified syntax) With Maven we can compile and run any code while enjoying dependencies resolution with mvn exec:java -Dexec.mainClass="com.mycompany.ComplexAndUsefulCode" The strength of Python, Node, Go ecosystems is that they made it super easy to pull down libraries, but official Java tries to be standalone – so silly! Language itself is laughable, it tries to keep up with modern languages but cannot implement features properly. Text blocks – seems like useful thing, but it is does not support interpolation! Wtf, so we are back to relying on archaic, badly readable formatting. Java String html = """ <html> <body> <p>Hello, %s</p> </body> </html> """.formatted(strA); Good languages: val name = “John” val html = """ <html> <body> <p>Hello, ${name}</p> </body> </html> """ Records… bad incomplete copies of data classes from Kotlin and Scala, do not even have copy constructors and methods, rely on POSITIONAL (bug prone) parametrization. The list goes on and on. I think at this time Java as a language is doing more disservice than helping JVM ecosystem. #Java #JDK

What Happened After Google Retrofitted Memory Safety Onto Its C++ Codebase?: Google's transistion to Safe Coding and memory-safe languages "will take multiple years," according to a post on Google's security blog. So "we're also retrofitting secure-by-design principles to our existing C++ codebase wherever possible," a process which includes "working towards bringing spatial memory safety into as many of our C++ codebases as possible, including Chrome and the monolithic codebase powering our services." We've begun by enabling hardened libc++, which adds bounds checking to standard C++ data structures, eliminating a significant class of spatial safety bugs. While C++ will not become fully memory-safe, these improvements reduce risk as discussed in more detail in our perspective on memory safety, leading to more reliable and secure software... It's also worth noting that similar hardening is available in other C++ standard libraries, such as libstdc++. Building on the successful deployment of hardened libc++ in Chrome in 2022, we've now made it default across our server-side production systems. This improves spatial memory safety across our services, including key performance-critical components of products like Search, Gmail, Drive, YouTube, and Maps... The performance impact of these changes was surprisingly low, despite Google's modern C++ codebase making heavy use of libc++. Hardening libc++ resulted in an average 0.30% performance impact across our services (yes, only a third of a percent) ... In just a few months since enabling hardened libc++ by default, we've already seen benefits. Hardened libc++ has already disrupted an internal red team exercise and would have prevented another one that happened before we enabled hardening, demonstrating its effectiveness in thwarting exploits. The safety checks have uncovered over 1,000 bugs, and would prevent 1,000 to 2,000 new bugs yearly at our current rate of C++ development... The process of identifying and fixing bugs uncovered by hardened libc++ led to a 30% reduction in our baseline segmentation fault rate across production, indicating improved code reliability and quality. Beyond crashes, the checks also caught errors that would have otherwise manifested as unpredictable behavior or data corruption... Hardened libc++ enabled us to identify and fix multiple bugs that had been lurking in our code for more than a decade. The checks transform many difficult-to-diagnose memory corruptions into immediate and easily debuggable errors, saving developers valuable time and effort. The post notes that they're also working on "making it easier to interoperate with memory-safe languages. Migrating our C++ to Safe Buffers shrinks the gap between the languages, which simplifies interoperability and potentially even an eventual automated translation." Angular Material Support Continues; Also: Clerk SDK for Astro https://lnkd.in/gfTxqiYr Last month, Google announced that some of the engineers on its Material Web Components (MWC) team had been reassigned to work on its internal framework, Wiz. That’s led to questions about ongoing support for Angular Material. MWC is a library of reusable, customizable UI components built on the web component standard. The components follow Google’s Material Design guidelines, making it easier to create a consistent look for web applications. The team at Angular made it clear this week that Angular Material won’t be impacted by the change because it does not use or depend on MWC. Instead, it uses a library called MDC Web under the hood. Normally, that’s just an internal implementation detail, they said, but the post goes on to explain that MDC is “a set of lower-level pieces that can be combined into components.” “Angular started incorporating MDC Web years ago, and Angular Material v15 made the components based on top of MDC Web the default,” the post noted. “Recently, in order to iterate more rapidly, rather than continuing to import MDC directly, the team is currently working to fork the code we depend on from MDC Web and will be iterating on it inside Angular Material going forward.” The change is not expected to have an impact on component APIs or their rendered output. Clerk Unveils Astro SDK The popular JS framework Astro has a new official SDK, @clerk/astro, which allows developers to add authentication and authorization into Astro applications. Clerk is a user management platform. The SDK ships with Clerk’s UI components, middleware, and low-level utilities for custom flows, the Clerk team said in the changeling. A quick start guide is available to help developers explore the offering. Meteor.JS 3 Releases MeteorJS is an open source, full-stack JavaScript framework designed for building real-time web and mobile applications. It can handle both client-side and server-side logic using JavaScript. The framework released version 3.0 this week, with the big news being that it now integrates with Node.js 20 and Express. The Node.js integration brings several enhancements to Meteor, including: Top-Level Await, which simplifies initialization of applications; and Stable Timers Promises API, which provides a promise-based alternative to traditional timer functions like setTimeout and setInterval. This update allows Meteor to fully take advantage of the latest features and performance improvements in Node.js 20, the team wrote. “The adoption of Express in Meteor 3 opens up new possibilities for developers, especially when building RESTful APIs or serving static files,” the team added. “Express is a minimal and flexible Node.js web application framework that provides a robust set of features for web and mobile applications.” In addition to Express and Node.js, there were several architectural changes that the team said would modernize...

🔍 Deep Dive: RAFT and 2PC in YugabyteDB 🔍 Let's explore how RAFT consensus and Two-Phase Commit (2PC) work together in YugabyteDB's sharded architecture! 🧱🔀 RAFT Consensus Algorithm: 🔄 RAFT ensures replication within each shard: 1. Leader Election: 👑 - Each shard has a leader and followers Example: Shard 1 with 3 replicas: A (leader), B, and C (followers) 2. Log Replication: 📝 - Writes go to the leader (A) - A replicates to B and C - Commit after majority acknowledgment 3. Safety: 🛡️ - If A fails, B or C can become the new leader - New leader ensures up-to-date log before accepting writes Two-Phase Commit (2PC): 🔒 2PC manages transactions across multiple shards: 1. Prepare Phase: 🤔 - Transaction coordinator sends prepare message to shards - Each shard leader checks commit possibility - Positive responses are logged 2. Commit Phase: ✅ - All positive? Coordinator sends commit message - Any negative? All shards abort Example: 💰➡️💰 Transferring money from Shard 1 to Shard 2: 1. Coordinator sends "prepare" to both shards 2. Shards check if they can process the transfer 3. If both agree, coordinator tells both to commit 4. Very excited that we shared our blockchain solution, LETUS, at SIGMOD-2024. LETUS introduce a re-designed architecture with delta-encoding and version-based indexing schema, also with block tiering and state pruning proposed. LETUS is also universal for different blockchains, adaptable for Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, etc. Evaluations shows that, LETUS improves the throughput by up to 15.8 times for the ERC-20 smart contract transfer workload. And reduces the space usage by up to 80.3%, reduces disk bandwidth usage by up to 95%. During the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, AntChain (augmented by LETUS) successfully supported the digital flame ignition event, where over 100 million torchbearers from more than 100 countries lit the digital torches in real-time online. To smooth your reading experience, let me give a bit of background; I am planning to write tech posts here (irregularly), to share the AI/ML/tech exp between all of us. I came from Hong Kong, where I wrote more on political / cultural, or even dining / winery matters, because that was our major concern, and I would not receive any feedback on any of my tech posts anyway.... but here in North America things are different. I joined some IT Whatsapp groups and the suggestions to problems had been really inspiring. When the democracy foundation is strong, and when the basic ethics are there, we can focus on the state-of-the-art tech, which hopefully can change our lives for the better. So in the next or coming posts, I would formulate some objectives or problems, which I may have a suggested approach solution, but I would like some of you to share your thoughts. It's just like beer talk. I am expecting your words in my coming posts!!

That’s Nadella’s vision: AI as a co-star, enhancing our favorite tools—think Excel with Python instead of Excel replaced by something else. But here’s the twist: 🔸 I see AI’s disruptive power surpassing any need for standalone software. 🔸 Why open an app when a smart agent can directly pull, manipulate, and display data on demand?
