Is it just me… Or does hiring slow down during the summer?? I know… everyone is enjoying travels and holidays! But not gonna lie, it really grinds my gears when projects and emails slow down. And when you have a hiring demand on your team and the summer is prolonging your search, how do you fill in the gap and keep the productivity pipeline flowing? This is where a Freelancer can be a great asset to you! Before my time with CodeControl, I worked on direct hire roles. And one of the questions I would ask to gage the demand for a new hire was this: “How much are you losing each week you don’t have this new person?” What I learned having worked with Freelancers, is that you don’t have to lose anything! An experienced Freelancer can be found quickly (My record at CodeControl and 9am is 24 hours 😎 ) and can jump into a project and keep things running while you work to find a permanent team member. Then again, this is only one way a Freelancer can be utilized… Have you thought about using Freelancers to fill the gap while conducting a permanent search? Or how do you utilize Freelancers? Or have you never used Freelancers?? Happy Summer Everyone!!

I'm curious, did #Upwork just open up more opportunities for freelancers?" or is it a system glitch........ This morning, I noticed something different. And it's good. #Upwork has reduced the connects needed to submit job proposals! This is huge. Here’s why: Less Connects mean more chances for us to apply. It means more doors open to projects we may have avoided due to cost. It means more freedom for freelancers especially those just starting out. For new freelancers, this is gold. They get to apply to more gigs. They get to grow their portfolios. They get to work without the pressure of saving every last Connect. And for all of us? This means opportunity. More proposals, less cost. It means we can focus on what we do best creating. This change is a big win. Hats off to the #Upwork team for listening and responding. I can't wait to see where this takes us! PS Who else noticed this on #upwork❓ If you have, are you excited about this as I am? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! #FreelanceLife #Upwork #RemoteWork #Opportunities #virtualassistant

I hired someone who earned more than a milliion in one year. ...And I’ve hired $4/hour project-based freelancers. The result? Neither is what you need. The expensive executive is usually overpayed. The cheap outsourced, per-hour freelancer isn’t loyal and rarely world-class. You need to find the middle-ground sweet spot. …Team members who are paid well because they DESERVE it but also aren’t entitled. You need people who are in the weeds and get stuff done… But also understand big picture. This is the goldilocks zone. And that’s exactly how we choose our talent for our clients. Full-time outsourced EMPLOYEES are way more cost effective than hiring in-house... but also skilled enough to contribute with their minds, not just their button clicking.

I’ve paid millions to freelancers over the years. My hardest lesson: paying more doesn’t always mean getting more. Here’s the truth: most people are hiring the wrong way. - No clear expectations. - No proper vetting. - And definitely no testing before diving in. That’s how you end up with overpaid, under-delivered projects. There’s a formula to hiring top talent *without* breaking the bank. Start by spending more time preparing the role than searching for a “snowflake” who gets you. Do that, and the right hire will follow. In my newsletter tomorrow, I break down: - How to hire freelancers that *deliver* - Why chasing “perfect” is a waste of time - The simple way to set a budget & avoid scope creep - How to vet like a pro (and save yourself the headache) (without losing momentum) I was able to get back over 20 hours / week, and improve work outputs massively by following this. Join 2,795 founders in my newsletter and you'll get it tomorrow at 8:15am EST. 🔔 Newsletter link in the featured section of my profile.

This week on the blog, If You're a Gig Worker (or use them) You Need to Know This If you’re a gig worker, or you use them in your business, it’s important that you are aware of recent legislation that went into effect this month. What Is a Gig Worker? A gig worker (independent contractor, freelancer, or contingent worker) is someone who works on a temporary, flexible basis, often for multiple clients or companies. They perform specific tasks, projects, or assignments for a predetermined period, rather than being employed full-time by a single employer. The number of gig employees has grown exponentially over the past few years. In 2024, it’s expected there will be 76.4 million people working as freelancers and indie professionals). These people work in a variety of industries including ride-hailing (Uber, Lyft, etc.), food delivery, freelance writing, graphic design, consulting, and others. When you’re looking for someone to join your team, you don’t need “just anyone.” You need someone that has “a very particular set of skills, skills they have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make them a dream for people like you.” That’s what flexible talent brings to the table. They’re specialists — ready to TAKE ON your most challenging projects with precision and finesse. Here’s why they’re the go-to experts: Cost-Effective Expertise: Freelancers don’t need a long ramp-up or endless onboarding. It’s quality without the corporate red tape (or any Grubhub meal credit perks). Agility & Scalability: When pressure’s on, freelancers know how to handle the mission. Scaling up or down isn’t a headache; it’s just another Tuesday. They adapt quickly and bring specialized knowledge — plus passion and experience. Fresh Perspectives: Freelancers are always on the move, working across industries and disciplines, which means they bring fresh ideas and solutions to your table.
