AWS launches RDS rightsize engine

The folks at Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced some neat stuff today that's worth knowing about! 1) RDS rightsizing recommendations, for both compute and storage, now available in Compute Optimizer. This is fantastic. I love that it supports storage optimization as well. The major downside here is more the fault of the RDS team: since RDS RIs are so inflexible, many of the compute optimization recommendations will be moot. At this point, RDS RIs are customer-hostile and it's the RDS team who is causing that pain now, whether intentional or not. https://lnkd.in/gRncfHxc 2) I was kinda meh on Cost Optimization Hub when it launched, and this makes it much, much better: export the recommendations! I've long thought that any usage optimization recommendation system is undifferentiated at the vendor level and should be both free and first-party tooling. Gotta say, I was surprised by this one. I didn't think it'd happen, since AWS doesn't have much incentive to do it. Apparently, customer pressure made it happen. I'm a little cautious about FOCUS--standards like this can be hit-or-miss, after all--but with AWS, GCP, Azure, and OCI all having announced native support, maybe it'll get solid adoption in other places now too (eg, SaaS). https://lnkd.in/gN8V8RaH Great work to the folks who made these releases happen. 🚀 AWS Aurora Serverless V2 Got a Major Upgrade In Last Month 🚀 Aurora Serverless V2 is now truly serverless, and this is a game-changer for cost optimization and scalability. Here’s the breakdown of what’s new and why it matters: 🔹 What’s New? Previously, Aurora Serverless V2 had a minimum capacity of 0.5 ACUs (Aurora Capacity Units), which cost around $40/month. This meant it didn’t truly scale down to zero, which many argued wasn’t really serverless. Now, AWS has updated Aurora Serverless V2 to scale down 𝘁𝗼 𝗭𝗘𝗥𝗢 𝗔𝗖𝗨𝘀 during periods of inactivity. This means you only pay for what you use, with no compute costs when your database is idle. 🔹 How Does It Work? 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱: When your database is in use, it scales up to handle queries. 𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱: After inactivity, you can configure a wait time (5 minutes to 24 hours) before the database pauses. 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲: During this time, compute costs drop to zero, but you still pay for storage. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁: When a new connection is initiated, there’s a ~𝟭𝟱-𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲. 🔹 Key Use Cases: This feature is perfect for: ✅ 𝗗𝗲𝘃 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 where you can scale down overnight or on weekends to save costs. ✅ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀 that can tolerate a 15-second cold start. 🔹 What to Watch Out For: 𝗥𝗗𝗦 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘅𝘆: Not compatible with this feature, as it maintains constant connections. 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲/𝗪𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘂𝗽 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Certain actions (e.g., parameter changes, replication) can trigger wakeups, so read the fine print! 🔹 The Bottom Line: This is a huge step forward for cost efficiency, especially for workloads with sporadic usage. In this post, we discuss the differences between provisioned instances and Aurora Serverless v2 instances, including pricing, performance, and scaling. We identify how to determine which mix of provisioned and Aurora Serverless v2 instances will best fit your workload and how to validate those assumptions. In short, for spiky or intermittent workloads, Aurora Serverless v2 is the best fit, whereas provisioned instances remain the best choice for steady state workloads.
