EOTEC DevNet proudly shares the Tonga Preparedness Pilot, a collaboration between UNOOSA’s UN Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER)-SPIDER program and CEOS (Committee on Earth Observation Satellites). 🗺️ Advancing flood management and cyclone mapping in Fiji 🇫🇯: Rovil Kumar's work with the Fiji Meteorological Service is leveraging advanced geospatial techniques to boost resilience against extreme weather events. This initiative, supported by UNITAR’s UNOSAT program, forms part of a broader project aimed at enhancing geospatial capabilities across the Asia-Pacific region. The three-year project, supported by the Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, focuses on strengthening capacities in geospatial information technologies to improve disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability. Through this project, participants gain vital skills and knowledge in Geographic Information Technologies (GIT), tailored to local needs and challenges. 🌊Flooding is one of the most destructive natural disasters, with severe impacts on communities, infrastructure and the environment. With the rise in both extreme weather events and shifting climate patterns, the demand for advanced tools to predict and monitor floods has never been more urgent. 🔎In our latest article, dr Jędrzej S. Bojanowski explains how satellite data from the Copernicus programme, accessible via the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem and CREODIAS is changing the game in flood monitoring and disaster management. From real-time flood monitoring using Copernicus Sentinel-1's all-weather radar capabilities to detailed damage assessments in infrastructure and agriculture, satellite data is at the heart of smarter decision-making in disaster response. 📡Satellite data also provides crucial insights into human activities like deforestation and urban expansion, which can intensify flood risks. Using advanced, highly accurate digital models like the Digital Twin Earth developed in the EU’s Destination Earth initiative, we will be able to simulate extreme weather scenarios, helping communities and policymakers better prepare for future floods. A low-pressure system named #Boris brought heavy rain to central Europe between 11 & 15 September, causing widespread #flooding from Poland to Romania and at least seven casualties. The American South is experiencing one of the most rapid sea level surges on Earth, forcing a reckoning for coastal communities across eight U.S. states The Washington Post analysis highlights the urgent need for coastal communities in the American South to address the challenges posed by the rapid sea level rise and take action to mitigate and adapt to the changing climate. Experts warn that by 2050, many Southeast cities are projected to experience more than 30 days of high tide flooding per year, even with reductions in fossil fuel emissions[2]. The combination of rising seas and a lunar cycle that occurs every 18.6 years is expected to worsen the impacts of high-tide flooding during the 2030s and 2040s[3]. A well-functioning communications system and internet services are very important elements of community resilience. Satellite internet, such as #SpaceX's #Starlink, should therefore be used, especially as SpaceX's #Starlink satellite internet is a groundbreaking response to crisis and disaster management.
