Last week was brutal! I got roped into a CPX-F (Command Post Exercise Functional) as an OC/T (Observer Controller/Trainer). If there’s one thing the Army loves, it’s acronyms. So, here’s the deal: 12-hour night shifts, 9 PM to 9 AM. My first ever week working nights. Phones locked away, and the exercise took place in a tent. Oh, and it was freezing because the generator kept failing. But, you know what? The unit I was evaluating nailed the mission. They really work well as a team, which was awesome to see, despite all the shortcomings they experienced. Sure, I’ve got a list of complaints about this week. But it also slapped me in the face with some of the things I actually love about the military: 1. It never fails that I meet some of the most interesting people. Military professionals often have varying civilian careers that mix with their military professions. I spent the week with a nurse practitioner, business owner, pastor, veterinary student, stay-at-home mom, and a paralegal. I just can’t make this stuff up! 2. Our conversations hit different this week. No screens, just raw, unfiltered tales ranging from battlefield memories to personal convictions and everything in between. It’s amazing what comes up when the digital world is locked away. Turns out, some of the suckiest Army moments come with the best company. 📸 Here is a photo of the OC/T team I was on, that was coined by the evaluated units’ LTC! #Army #ArmyReserve #observer #UWSP #UWSPMBA

Additional Info It’s important to note that service in a combat zone is not a requirement for eligibility. Veterans who began their active duty after September 7, 1980, must have served a minimum of 24 months or the full period for which they were called or ordered to active duty, with at least one day served during a wartime period. Officers who began their active duty after October 16, 1981, and were not previously on active duty for at least 24 months also fall into this category. Get FREE CONSULTATION from our experts! This Veterans Day, we honor the brave men and women who have served our nation. Their service extends beyond the battlefield, profoundly shaping emergency medicine and prehospital care. Military research has revolutionized how we respond to emergencies, particularly with trauma and in wilderness and austere environments. Techniques like tourniquet use, trauma care, and hypothermia management—developed in military settings—are now lifesaving tools in both civilian and remote medical contexts. At the Mountain Training Network, our Wilderness Medicine brand, we proudly carry this legacy forward. Our curriculum is built on the latest clinical practice guidelines and enriched by the expertise of Colin MacDonald (pictured below), a Marine veteran and one of our Wilderness Medicine textbook authors. His unique perspective bridges the gap between military and civilian wilderness medicine, equipping responders to face the most extreme conditions. This shared knowledge doesn’t happen in isolation. Organizations like the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) and the United States Department of Defense Defense Health Agency (DHA) work together to ensure that advancements in military medicine benefit wilderness and civilian providers alike. Their collaboration has been instrumental in developing Prolonged Field Care (PFC) guidelines, which empower medical providers to deliver effective care in delayed evacuation scenarios—crucial for both military operations and wilderness expeditions. At Capital City CPR, we incorporate these advancements across all our courses. From First Aid/CPR, where we include STOP THE BLEED® at no extra cost, to advanced programs like Wilderness First Aid and Industrial First Responder, our training reflects the latest in lifesaving techniques. Today, we honor the lasting contributions of our veterans to emergency care and express our deepest gratitude for their service. #VeteransDay #WildernessMedicine #ProlongedFieldCare #STOPTHEBLEED #TECC #MountainTrainingNetwork #CapitalCityCPR

Data suggests Michigan nursing home care costs average $8,970+ per month for a semi-private room and $9,720+ per month for a private room. Getting veterans connected to the benefits they earned in service can make a big difference in their lives – and the lives of their families – when they need skilled care. At State Veterans Homes, veterans who require nursing home care for services related to a service-connected disability, or veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 70% or higher, are charged $0 for nursing home care, and they keep their disability compensation. Get connected to your veteran benefits before you need skilled care. Contact our friends at the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, at 800-MICH-VET, to get connected to an accredited veteran service officer from the State, Counties, or Veteran Service Organizations. It matters. #veterans #longtermcare #veteranbenefits
