🛢️Oil spills are events with catastrophic impacts on the oceans and marine life. Despite a global increase in maritime trade, the average number of oil spills has been decreasing annually. Although it reached an average of 24.5 spills per year during the 1970-1979 period, this number fell to 1.8 for the 2010-2019 period. However, this frequency is still too high. Notably, in 2023, a single oil spill resulted in the release of 700 metric tons of oil. Current methods of oil spill cleanup are inefficient and unsustainable; the most common approach involves burning the oil, which releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Instead, innovations are being pursued in areas like novel absorbent materials, robotics, detection and sensor technologies or synthetic biology solutions. 💡A few startups in the space: - Matter of Trust - Petrochemicals-absorbent hair-based mats. - Digital Earth Solutions - Ocean modeling for oil spill trajectory forecasts. - Inobiostar - Oil degrading microorganisms. - PierSight Space - Satellite imagery for detection and monitoring of oil spills. Currently, no VCs are specialized in the sector but a few have made multiple investments for example Seraphim Space has invested in Sateliot and ICEYE, space tech companies with oil spill cleaning applications, additionally, Propel Capital has invested in SurfCleaner AB, an oil separator skimmer.
