Product Managers, Data Scientists and business roles have much less skin in the game compared to Engineers. That engineers at FAANG companies get very competitive comp is nothing new. What I found interesting, though, is that the 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 is substantially higher for Eng. compared to other roles (~40% higher at Google & Facebook, for example). 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Equity was about 20% - 30% of my compensation while I was at Uber and Meta in Strategy & Operations roles, and I only got closer to Eng. levels once I moved into a growth stage company (which tend to emphasize equity as part of the compensation package). An important part of roles like Product, BizOps etc. is to find growth and efficiency opportunities for the company, so you’d expect that the level of incentives in the compensation reflects that. At least at big tech cos, that’s not the case. If you want aligned incentives and upside and you’re not an Engineer, you might have to look at earlier stage companies to find the comp. mix that’s attractive to you.

It's easy to make fun of the FAANG big tech companies. But when I think about my time at Google, I realize I learned some really valuable things while I was there. Things that, yes, have helped me in building Pump. 1. Their culture. Google's culture is close-knit, and I enjoyed being able to focus on my work while I was there. Perks like an on-site gym and laundry can help with that, believe it or not! 2. A focus on creativity. Every project name was something fun and creative, and they always had an angle of trying to make something interesting. 3. The network. Any big company has this perk - if I want to make an introduction to someone who worked at Google, I can reach out no questions asked. 4. The processes. As we're growing, I am seeing how certain processes are necessary and helpful in larger companies. I loved my time there, and I'm confidently saying that you can learn a lot working at a big company!

🎉 Celebrating 10 Years at Google! 🎉 On June 1st, 2014, I took a leap of faith and joined Google, never imagining it would become the longest and most rewarding chapter of my career so far. Here's a highlight of my dynamic decade in numbers: ⁣ •𝟑 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬: I’ve had the privilege of exploring various roles in Google Ads, Google Play, and YouTube (still feeling like a Noogler sometimes, though 😅).⁣ •𝟏𝟑 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 (𝟔 𝐢𝐧 𝟐 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬!): Changes are not uncommon in the tech industry. I've definitely learned how to thrive in ambiguity and comfortably adapt to any working/management style.⁣ •𝟐 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬: With tremendous support from leadership and HR, I had a life-changing transfer from Japan to Singapore (more to come?).⁣ •𝟐𝟑 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬: Visited multiple offices across 13 countries and connected with amazing Googlers and business partners around the globe (who's up for our next adventure?).⁣ •𝟏𝟎𝐤𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫: Thanks to Google's focus on employee well-being, I’ve even managed to shed a few pounds (kudos to the Google Food Team for preparing world-class healthy food and the Google gym instructors for pushing me hard!) .⁣ ⁣ There have been ups, downs, and everything in between, but it's been an incredibly fun and rewarding ride. The growth opportunities, the unwavering support from my colleagues, managers, mentors and coaches – I couldn't be more grateful to be part of this amazing Google family.
