I was diagnosed with a form of cancer called Seminoma at the age of 29. By the time it was caught, the cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes, requiring surgery and months of chemotherapy. I survived, but it wasn’t lost on me that if I was born a few decades earlier, my story might have had a very different ending. I had access to excellent care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), health insurance (though it barely scratched the surface of the costs), and a support network that many don’t have. Jessica was there with me every step of the way, even though we had only been dating for a year at the time. The most important lesson I learned is how valuable our time is – and how we don’t fully realize this until it’s at risk of running out. I didn’t know that I would someday have two daughters whose faces would radiate pure joy the minute I walk in the door. I didn’t know that I would have the opportunity to work alongside so many amazing people, feeding my curiosity and pulling the future forward. It makes me constantly wish for more time. Since my recovery, I’ve dedicated myself to causes that unlock precious time for someone getting a similar diagnosis. That’s why Cycle for Survival holds a special place in my heart. Over the past 13 years, the Greycroft team and I have helped raise over $500,000 for rare cancer research through this organization. This year, I’m thrilled to co-host the first startup-focused ride with Michael Lazerow and Kass Lazerow on February 7th at Equinox East 43rd Street. This is an opportunity to build community – sharing survivor stories, supporting one another, and funding the critical mission to stop cancer at its source. To anyone in the startup or venture world, join us. A few hours together could give patients years of their lives back. And take it from a cancer survivor: Time is priceless. – If you’re able, please consider supporting Cycle for Survival. It’s a chance to turn our time and resources into something that can truly change lives: https://lnkd.in/eqpYnXqZ
Ian Sigalow, I also had a seminoma, which was discovered when I was 34. Fortunately, mine was Stage 1, requiring only surgery and some prophylactic radiation. That said, I feel the same gratitude that you do that I was able to be treated when I was. I wish I was able to join you on 2/7 for your ride. I will do something equally athletic that day in honor of your ride and will post a picture here! If there are any Colorado-based start-up folks on this thread with similar stories, let me know. Let's do a Mountain West version of Ian's ride!
Thanks for the reminder what really matters in life esp during this holiday season.
Amazing....Sorry I will be and have to miss this, but will be with you in spirit, as will a good group from Team Primary Venture Partners who are already signed up to ride. We've got your back!
This is so inspiring and heartfelt. I’m glad you and so many others are able to thrive after such a challenging experience. I just lost my dad to cancer, we started his treatment a little too late. It really highlights the importance of supporting survivors and spreading awareness about early detection—it can make all the difference. Thank you for sharing this. ❤️
Very inspiring and wishing you continued success and blessed recovery.
I had no idea. Thank you for sharing and for doing so much for good causes.
OMG Ian Sigalow Didn't know you went through that horrible ordeal. I lost my sister to cancer, love your cause and admire the work you've done to raise money for it for all these years.
Ian Sigalow I did not know this story - will happily support your cause and would love to reconnect.
I had no idea. So glad you are well and thriving.
