Today the OAO joined the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s annual Open House! We focused on our home planet and our place in the Universe. Many, many thanks to Makiko Aoki, Hiroko Komiyama and Kelly Blumenthal, PhD, EdM for their hard work! And a special thank you to IAU Office of Astronomy for Development for our Earthball; it is being put to good use! お疲れさまでした!

Pictured: an adult unleashing her inner child to draw some happy little planets in a happy little Solar System. If you’re looking for a drawing prompt for your weekend, try this one: what would it look like if we all decided to take care of the Earth? Share your drawings (and your creative genius) with us! One of the activities at our booth during the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s Open House Day was to draw what it would look like if we all took care of the planet. We learned three things today: * adults love a good drum roll as much as (if not more than) kids do * our Director, Kelly Blumenthal, PhD, EdM, is very sensitive to the sound of pencil on paper * children are truly the masters of abstraction

One of the OAO's Strategic Actions is to promote the Pale Blue Dot 🌍 message. Pictures like this remind us that we're all just complicated monkeys floating on a delicate grain of sand in a vast ocean. Astronomy provides us with a perspective we sometimes lack. Now, more than ever, it's important to think about our place in the Universe and come up with new ways to be better to each other and our planet. ❤️ 💫
#PPOD: Pale Blue Dot from Mars 🔴 In the top third of the image, near the center, "that little dot there, that's home, that's us." The Pale Blue Dot🔵 rises just before sunrise🌅 on the horizon of another planet (Mars). Imaged by NASA's Spirit rover on March 8, 2004, 63 sols into its mission, about an hour before sunrise at its location on #Mars. This image isn't a single shot but a composite of Navcam and pan cam images of the sky. Color was added from other RGB composites of Mars captured at sunset from Spirit.
