AI in Action | 2025 Edition 52: This is Fantasy Football… on AI What does it take to give 14 million+ fantasy managers a competitive edge? The answer is smarter insights powered by our AI. Want to see how? Read now and subscribe ⤵
As a long time fantasy football underperformer, we love to talk strategy and predictions, but there’s a point where everything gets too random to call. In big leagues, trying to guess how those low-ranked Flex 2/3 or Q/IR waiver guys will actually perform is a total shot in the dark. The truth is, nobody reliably nails those late-round surprises (I passed Javonte Williams pick...) Most league champs win because a couple of their depth picks turned out way better than expected. Still… I’d love to find a way to crack that code, only to beat again this season Jaime Galiana Agurruza 😅
What IBM is doing here is a great example of a wider shift happening across AI right now: we’re moving from systems that process data to systems that map hidden structure inside complex environments. Fantasy football may seem like a light-hearted use case, but underneath it is the same challenge faced in science, finance, and logistics — making sense of enormous state-spaces where tiny correlations shape large-scale outcomes. AI platforms like watsonx are getting better not just at prediction, but at understanding how information flows across a network of possibilities. That’s the real breakthrough: identifying which interactions matter, which don’t, and how the “shape” of data guides the best decisions. As these models improve, we’ll see AI that can: • compress billions of variables into stable, interpretable patterns • forecast emergent behavior before it becomes visible • give individuals strategic capability once reserved for large institutions It’s exciting to see these capabilities delivered directly into the hands of everyday users through partnerships like IBM × ESPN. We’re entering an era where even recreational analytics gives a glimpse of how future decision-making systems will work across every industry.

Thanks for Sharing. How could I have IBM showcase this at an AI Conference in Feb? www.aiicon.org. We have room for more instructor.
The key transition lies in the bridge they mention: the same principles used to find a 'Diamond in the Rough' in sports data are what optimize business decisions.
Impressive application of AI at scale IBM Turning massive user data into real-time insights is exactly where modern AI shines. Exciting to see how this raises the bar for personalised digital experiences.
NFL data, including player stats, historical trends, injury reports, and matchup data, to provide personalized recommendations for fantasy team.
Impressive to see watsonx helping fantasy managers uncover hidden value through clear, data-driven insights. A smart example of how AI can simplify decisions on and off the pitch, maybe the English Premier League will be next?
