I’m not sharing this as a flack but as a person. I’ve been graced by so many examples of great people in my professional life, from some of the greatest writers - especially the late Pete Hamill, who introduced me to my career in media and guided me through most of it - to leaders like Michael Dowling, who shows us every day what it takes to guide a health care system of nearly 90,000 team members. I’ve worked close enough to Mr. Dowling to know it’s no show. His level of commitment to staff and the communities we serve is unparalleled. It fosters a sense of purpose in all of us - and it’s why I’m astounded every day by really everyone I work with at Northwell Health. I’m so proud of the work this system does around the clock, and I’m so grateful that I get a front row seat to see all the impact made by this incredible team.
As I look ahead to 2025, I look forward to each week, when I have the privilege of meeting up to 250 new Northwell Health employees at our Beginnings seminar. I enjoy discussing our health system’s culture and history, and sharing my personal journey from my childhood in Ireland to my own beginnings here at Northwell. I always kick off these programs by answering questions from the group. One question has stayed with me. A new employee asked, “What will you do to make sure I’m successful?” My answer may not have been what he was looking for: Only you can measure your own success and happiness. It is up to you to do the work and take advantage of opportunities. Though Northwell is known for offering abundant employee resources, it is up to us as individuals to make each day better than the last.
