Don’t Make Coding Interviews HARDER Than They Need to Be (Avoid these two common mistakes) ↳ Don't ask difficult clarifying questions or edge cases. In technical interviews, be careful with the questions you ask. You might be tempted to bring up edge cases or clarifications that make the problem way harder than it is. ↳ Don’t overcomplicate things! Stick to what you know, and avoid using advanced techniques or optimal approaches if you aren’t confident. I just finished my fourth technical interview since starting my search for junior dev jobs. Here are my three takeaways: 1. Unless you're applying to FAANG, data structures and LeetCode-style questions are not common in junior interviews. The hardest algorithm problem I’ve faced so far involved using recursion—no graphs, no DFS, no trees. Companies I interviewed with seem to evaluate problem-solving ability with realistic, complex problems rather than plain algorithm problems. Thumbs up to those companies! (maybe that's also why we chose each other 😎 ) And of course, it's always to a good idea to ask the recruiter what would be the scope of the technical interview. 2. Be cautious about over-preparing. Technical interviews are not about what you know; they’re about what you can perform under pressure in a given time frame. Think of it like professional athletes: the last thing they do before a race is train hard. Instead, they usually have a tapering period leading up to the event. From the time you’re scheduled for an interview to the interview day, there usually isn’t enough time to learn new things well enough to perform under pressure. Last-minute prepping can even undermine your performance because you may feel exhausted going to the interview. 3. My favorite interview prep tip- relax, and remember you’re just showing up to be yourself. If a company expects you to know everything as a junior, that’s probably a red flag. How many LeetCode questions do you *really* need to ace a FAANG interview? After looking into data from interviewing.io, I realized you don't need to solve 1000+ questions to land a top tech job. Here's what stood out to me: ✅ Solving *around 500 questions* can put you in the top tier of candidates, with diminishing returns beyond that. ✅ Hard questions are worth the effort! Completing 50 hard questions boosts your interview score twice as much as 50 medium ones. ✅ Contest ratings? They don't seem to have much impact on interview success or landing a FAANG role. TL;DR - Consistency matters more than rankings. Focus on mastering medium questions, then push yourself to take on harder ones for deeper learning. Why I didn’t ask Leetcode-style questions in my last 30 technical interviews? For starters, you should know that I am not opposed to Leetcode-style questions. I know all big FAANG companies do it, and I would do it too if I had to build a search engine or process huge amounts of data. Also, people are willing to put up with multiple technical rounds for a FAANG company. I don't have that luxury. All I get is 1️⃣ hour. So how do I interview efficiently in one hour, as a non-FAANG? 🤓 I can't test everything, so I have to prioritize. What does my team need most: knowledge or problem solving? For this project the answer is problem solving, which comes with huge advantage. People who can problem solve can also learn and fill in knowledge gaps. So I only had to make sure that the participants saw the problem for the first time ever. And since many memorize Leetcode-style questions, I could not take the risk of asking those. 🕵🏻♂️ Instead I came up with tasks like: "Language X has a function called map. Let's reimplement it from scratch together" or "Here's what currying is. Let's curry this example function together". This gave me a good overview of their understanding of the language, as well as how they perform in situations where they are presented with novel problems. I could easily tell who could think through a problem and who relied on memorized solutions. 💬 What do you think? What kind of questions do you ask in your interviews?

Staying updated with industry trends? Mention blogs, courses, or communities you follow. This shows your commitment to continuous learning. In my experience, thorough preparation and practice can make a significant difference. It’s not only knowing the answers but also about presenting them confidently and clearly.
