"Look at most org charts. Can you see a teacher among the fluff?" Sam Jacob as CEO of Collarts (Australian College of the Arts) has a rich history in leadership among multiple global public, private and VET institutions including London South Bank University, Charles Darwin University, Deakin University, Monash University and Torrens University Australia Their diversity reflects how different institutions serve the range of learner needs as we seek to change more future lives for good. In this episode Sam talks with Professor Christy Collis of HERDSA Higher Education Research Society of Australasia and I, illustrating how most people in public universities have little understanding of private universities or the VET sector and how both work. What is clear, as we all develop better sectoral literacy and celebrate the richness of our sector ecology, is that diversity is good. What emerges is that all providers will only be student-centric if they are teacher-centric. This is an episode to cut through the fluff in the system from two great sector activists who will be part of a fluff free panel on sectoral diversity at the HEDx conference at UQ on October 31st with details of that in the comments.

Firstly, congratulations to all the students and their teachers who received IB results on Friday. To avoid being a nuisance to my incredibly competent operations team, by hovering over their shoulders as they worked, on Thursday I instead attended the Festival of Education (https://lnkd.in/eXqUydkB) and was part of a panel organised by Public First. After opening statements which risked the panel being in violent agreement, we found some differences about the role of subject knowledge in how we teach young people. While I recognise that you need a body of knowledge to start making links and patterns between areas, I would argue that what that knowledge is doesn’t matter, you can learn what scientific truth or evidence means from any evidence base from palaeontology to astrophysics. Likewise you can learn the principles of literary analysis from any of the great (or even not so great) authors. I worry that when we specify what knowledge a student must learn we then start to focus on assessing that knowledge rather than assessing the higher order skills. We also know that students will need to continue learning new facts and areas of knowledge throughout their life, so is there a really a specific body of knowledge which an education must provide or is it about developing their skills in learning and thinking? There was also a great question from the audience on how much autonomy schools should have in developing curricula. As developing a curriculum framework and the key concepts is no easy task where do we draw the line between giving teachers freedom and supporting them with frameworks to work within. Of course the IB takes a very different approach to this across its different programmes, and I have seen individual schools thrive and struggle with each choice. A key thing to remember is that not all great teachers will be great curriculum designers (and converse is certainly true) so where is the right balance?

Funded in part by a grant from Teagle, a new platform will help students transfer credits to North Carolina colleges and universities and find a clear path to completing their degrees: "The new online portal, powered by Acadeum, pulls institutional data from the two state systems’ 36 four-year colleges and 58 community colleges into one public database. Hope Williams, president of North Carolina’s four-year system, believes the online portal will cut out the labor-intensive legwork of researching each college’s credit transfer guidelines. 'As students have more information about the different institutions to which they might transfer, they’re much more likely to find that right fit. And if they find the right fit, they’re much more likely to complete.'" Read more:
