🌖 Europa fact of the day #3: Despite being just 1/4 the size of Earth, Europa might be hiding an ocean that contains twice as much water as Earth’s global ocean. Fun size comparison: - Earth's deepest point (Mariana Trench): 11km deep - Europa's estimated ocean depth: 60–150km deep! That's like having up to 13 Mariana Trenches stacked on top of each other! 🤯 Even more mind-bending: All this water exists in a moon smaller than ours. How? Europa's entire structure is different from Earth's—instead of a rocky mantle, it's got layers of ocean! Imagine trying to study an ocean you can't even see... Weird Fact 6 Apophis and April 13, 2029 Apophis is a near-Earth asteroid (NEA) that captured public interest for a while due to concerns about a potential Earth impact, it was discovered in 2004 and initially given a small chance of hitting Earth in 2029. Relax! In 2021, it was announced that Apophis has no chance of impacting Earth for the next 100 years. Apophis will, however, make a close approach to Earth on April 13, 2029. At that time, it will be closer than geosynchronous communication satellites, but still a safe distance of 19,600 miles (31,600 kilometers) from Earth's surface. OSIRIS-REX: The NASA spacecraft launched in 2016 has successfully collected samples from asteroid Bennu in 2023. Now it is re-purposed as OSIRIS-APEX (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer) to rendezvous with Apophis in late 2029, following its close Earth flyby. It will then spend about 18 months studying the asteroid. Thanks for Reading!

The spacecraft lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida on Monday, is on its way to visit the asteroid that the U.S. space agency NASA diverted from its course in 2022⭐ It is part of an international mission to see if we can prevent dangerous asteroids from hitting Earth. The European Space Agency-led Hera project will analyze what happened to the space rock when NASA intentionally collided with it; it is a continuation of NASA's Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) project. 👉 When the spacecraft arrives in December 2026, it will observe the size and depth of the impact crater created in Dimorphos. “We need to understand what the physical properties of these asteroids are - what are they made of? Are they blocks of rock? Are they made of sand inside?” says Naomi Murdoch, a scientist involved in the European Space Agency mission. Jupiter's moon Europa is comparable in size to Earth's moon, but it possesses a fascinating distinction: evidence indicates that beneath its icy surface lies a vast ocean of liquid water, potentially containing more water than all of Earth's oceans combined! In just two weeks, the launch window for NASA's #EuropaClipper mission will begin. This mission aims to deploy a robotic spacecraft equipped with advanced scientific instruments to explore whether Europa has the necessary conditions to support extraterrestrial life.
