Dr. Jim Zeliff, founder of Allegheny Equine Associates, discusses the regulatory issues surrounding xylazine. The drug is being cut with street fentanyl, rendering Narcan ineffective. Powdered xylazine is sourced from China and enters the U.S. through the southern border. The DEA has proposed scheduling xylazine to combat trafficking, but due to its widespread use in the veterinary community, the AVMA Legislative Advisory Council pushed for consideration for veterinary use.
