Looks like Sam Altman’s company is shaking off the do-gooder shackles. OpenAI's founding mission statement read, “OpenAI is a non-profit artificial intelligence research company. Our goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return. Since our research is free from financial obligations, we can better focus on a positive human impact.” Tech columnist Dave Lee did some light editing of OpenAI’s (now quite out of date) founding mission statement in his latest column. Dave wrote: “OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research company. Our goal is to advance digital intelligence to generate financial return.” 💡That is much clearer and far more accurate. These investors are not doing it for the good of humanity. They do it for the benefit of their funds and partners. I recommend using non-profit AI agents that are based on open source, such as Grok from x AI. The quality of the models, especially the distorted information output of ChatGPTs due to regularities, is not good for the truth. OpenAI #chatgpt

Nope! Clean drinking water, safe heating infrastructure (gas, electric or water) and cooling (either obtained by ACs, smart architecture or etc) The Internet, is critical infrastructure. Wi-Fi, 4 and 5G, is literally critical infrastructure. "AI" (meaning what exactly? Our ability to run Deep Learning algos?), while important components in a lot of the systems that make the world go round, is definitely not "critical infrastructure".
AI is "CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE" according to OpenAI's new VP of Public Works, Chris Lehane. Is this a fair statement to make? 🌉✨ In his first interview in his new role, Lehane is keen to make a mark. ""My historical analogy here is the New Deal," Lehane told Axios. "It built out the bricks and mortar infrastructure that helped set up the U.S. to be the 'arsenal of democracy,' and helped make sure the industrial century translated into meaningful benefits for everyday folks." Between the lines: Lehane is equating OpenAI's interests with America's — echoing the famous 1953 view of General Motors CEO Charles Wilson that "what was good for our country was good for General Motors, and vice versa." "People should want OpenAI to succeed, because they understand that if OpenAI succeeds, by definition, [democratic] societies succeed," Lehane said." BOLD statements indeed 👀 The journalist makes an insightful observation at this point: → "The shift from "AI is the new magic" to "AI is the new infrastructure" is also a reaction to the American public's increasing skepticism of Silicon Valley wizardry." 🧝♀️💫 After his roles as VP of Policy and Communications at Airbnb and press secretary on Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign, Lehane as Chief Strategy Officer at a VC firm focused on cryptocurrencies. Can AI in the form provided by OpenAI credibly be deemed "critical infrastructure" today? OpenAI's motivations are obvious. Regardless, it would appear that they will be focusing on how to lean on and influence government agencies more than ever with this appointment. #ai #openai #policy #infrastructure https://lnkd.in/di3pmtPr

Fascinating read on how we might think about making AI democratic. Whose values are we talking about when we discuss value-alignment? What gives them the power to disseminate those values, and to what end? And could more advanced AI give way to new ways of thinking about the democratic process?
