Dr. Matthew Steensma integrates prayer and medical practice in his role as a cancer surgeon. His article, "A Balanced Prescription: Healing Through Medicine, Healing Through Prayer," illustrates the challenges and synergies of combining spiritual beliefs with medical interventions. Dr. Steensma's experience with a critically injured patient and the ethical dilemmas posed by differing beliefs about healing prompt us to consider how science and faith can coexist to enhance patient care. This discussion is central to our curriculum, encouraging a holistic approach to healthcare that respects diverse perspectives. #MedicalHumanities #Baylor #HealthCare #Empathy #HealthHumanities

Change in your field, change in your role, change in your life. We've seen hesitation from clinicians in leaving conventional medicine for functional medicine, mostly from fear of change. We're here to tell you that although change may be uncomfortable at first, it's absolutely worth it. If you're on the fence about making the change, read our blog post on if functional medicine could be right for you and your patients: https://lnkd.in/dUUWeR-R

I would highly recommend this excellent discussion of Microaggressions in Medicine. It discusses the role of stereotypes and how patients' care can suffer because of them. https://lnkd.in/ghJuJE48

Have you ever heard of "Ladran Sancho, señal de que avanzamos," which translates to “Let the dogs bark, Sancho, it’s a sign that we are moving forward”? I always had it on my mind to show that our research pushed and progressed in other areas. Now, with Cheryl Anderson and Kathy Trieu, we used that analogy in the context of low-sodium #potassium-enriched #salts. Check out our editorial published in Annals of Internal Medicine. This month in Brain & Life magazine, neurologist Mark Hallett, MD, FAAN, responds to the question “What are the benefits of joining a clinical trial?” In addition to potential access to new medications, focused attention from medical experts, and in some cases even monetary compensation, there is an opportunity to help researchers solve the puzzle of diseases. “All participants—even those who receive placebos—are contributing to medical research,” notes Dr. Hallett. Academic Consortium member, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is dedicated to creating person-centered solutions to best meet each patient’s needs, and new research reveals an opportunity for Ohio State to lead the way in improving care for patients with sickle cell disease. Senior study author Maryanna Klatt, PhD, clinical professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, and study first author Janet Childerhose, PhD, research assistant professor of Internal Medicine, found that the most profound source of distress for these patients is the anticipation before going to and time spent at acute care centers to manage their chronic pain. Next steps include considering how clinical settings may be altered to better address and reduce patient distress.
