🚀 I have been working in #embedded #software for over 20 years. Time flies. And things change. A LOT! #Cloud technology is changing the way things are being done. Here are three trends that are changing the industry ... once again. 1️⃣ Builds are automated via CI/CD. Fix the code -> build -> deploy. Rinse and repeat. As a result, both fixes and evolutions are coming faster than before. 2️⃣ AI makes certain devices at the #edge smarter, more efficient. 3️⃣ The Cloud is being fed more and more data from the devices, leading to further *potential* improvements in the Cloud and at the Edge. Of course, there are challenges. Which I will address a bit later. #device

I started in Embedded Software back in 2004 Back in these days, the world was very different I was deal 8-bit, 16-bit, sometimes 32-bit micros I was also dealing in a world that was primarily disconnected And that has actually changed a lot Especially recently: it accelerated even more More and more, the technologies that have been developed in the server and Cloud worlds are coming down to the embedded software world and revolutionizing what we are doing there And I basically boiled it down to three major trends One key thing that the Cloud world is bringing to the embedded world is the way that we are building software In the past, how do you develop software? Often, waterfall, thoroughly test it, have a few revisions per year, update the firmware Those kind of things were well-understood and accepted by the community But now, the Cloud native approach is seeping in Instead of just relying on a limited number of versions to be released a year What you want to do is to keep things as code for as long as possible automate that into a CI/CD and as soon as you have a bug, fix it, and then compile, build the application and send it off through OTA (Over The Air) updates This is something that is Cloud native That's what the Cloud people have been doing for years now and that is actually seeping in the embedded software community as well The second technology coming from Cloud influencing embedded software is AI Now, AI, there is a lot of buzz around it But essentially what our clients are doing right now is taking a long hard look at their devices and thinking about ways to make them more efficient We are not talking about LLMs here We are talking about things like optimizing maintenance schedule or maybe optimizing an energy grid Those kind applications And the idea here here is to take the models you have trained in the Cloud and somehow optimize them and place them in devices so they make better local decisions And obviously, you could say "just have a 5G connection and have the Cloud decide for you" It's not always practical and you don't want to have that much data transiting through a network all the time So, more intelligent devices is actually a good thing It's improving the usefulness of embedded software at the Edge The final Cloud-based technology that is heavily influencing embedded software right now The Cloud is basically turning embedded software as a collection agent for itself I mean, if you are talking about AI for example It's clear that the more data you have - good data obviously! the better it is AI is relying heavily on huge data lakes and what better way for generating data than to have multiple sensors-like devices out there feeding the data back to the Cloud This is a very promising as well Because you are talking here about a distributed Cloud You are talking about having the Cloud everywhere And essentially the devices become their eyes and ears But then, Cloud technology seeping in embedded software also comes with its own sets of challenges These are significant From my observations the industry has not settled totally on best practices And just like I did three trends on how these Cloud technologies are changing things for us in the embedded software field I will also go through each and everyone of these three major challenges in my next video
