What is the biggest threat to the environmental movement in Europe? Maybe it is our lurch to the far right... Reform UK "Net zero means reducing man made CO2 emissions to stop climate change. It can’t. Climate change has happened for millions of years, before man made CO2 emissions, and will always change. We are better to adapt to warming, rather than pretend we can stop it. Up to 10 times more people die of cold than warmth." Nordic Populism: All parties have continuously framed climate policy in terms of “urban elites” versus “the people” outside the city centres, in the most typical populist tradition. AFD Germany: The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) challenges the scientific consensus on climate, and describes climate policy as “hysteria”. Italy's Environment Minister: Gilberto Pichetto Fratin “if the climate is changing, it is because of the climate … I do not know how much climate change is due to man and how much to the Earth's [natural] climate change." As the climate warms, migration northwards increases, fuelling anti-immigration beliefs and charging far right populism. We have to take control of the narrative - renewable energy protects homes, livelihoods, business. We divorce ourselves from corrupt autocratic regimes, we take back control of our energy supply.

Politicians responsible for combating climate change should lead by example to motivate citizens to follow suit, writes Damian Carrington, based on scientific evidence in The Guardian (https://lnkd.in/gYJgQ6FU). When you are not able to lead by example, should you take on a leading role in combating climate change? Should scientists, philosophers, commentators, public servants, etc. advocating for behavioural change to avoid a climate disaster also lead by example? In my view, nobody who cannot lead by example should be responsible for driving this agenda.

The best changes from the climate movement are still to come. We now have so many incredible solutions being rolled out and worked out where we can truly better imagine a more sustainable future, bit by bit. And we need everyone's voice to push for them. The next puzzle piece needed: social momentum to demand these solutions rolled out at scale, accessibly, effectively. From renewable energy to fossil fuel divestment - these things need to be championed by all of us. Come to Climate Writers workshop and panel at Climate Action Week Sydney to: 📩 Learn the tips and tricks of voicing your ask for climate action to your MP. Very few people know: 1 letter can be counted as 20 people's voices by MPs; ALL letters must be read by their office, and well written ones must be flagged. You'll learn: 🔸 Why contacting politicians is the most effective lever for systemic change 🔸 How to write a letter to a politician 🔸 Climate topics to write about and letter-writing templates 🔸 How to reflect on and communicate your personal story and connection to climate change https://lnkd.in/dirgD9mU 🌏 Learn how we built our community, Climate Writers, to: 🔸 get 350+ people to write nearly 200+ letters to MPs 🔸 secure meetings with multiple MPs 🔸 get published in local papers 🔸 form input for a policy submission for a Youth Advisory Council on climate (and also got kicked out of my sharehouse living room for being too big). https://lnkd.in/dvQp2ZSJ

Nigel Farage is wrong on climate change. Here’s why.👇 ❌ He denies the overwhelming scientific consensus that human activities, primarily burning fossil fuels, are the dominant cause of global warming over the past century. ✅ This contradicts the experts at the world's leading science bodies (e.g. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)) ❌He falsely claims climate change is a natural phenomenon that can't be stopped, and that we should just "adapt to warming." This stance disregards the urgent need for climate action and the huge economic opportunities in clean energy. ✅The IPCC has clearly stated that reducing human-caused greenhouse gas emissions is crucial to limiting further warming and avoiding the worst impacts. ❌Farage's Reform UK party wants to scrap the UK's net zero emissions target and hold a referendum on climate policies, despite public support for climate action. Reform UK has also received significant funding from fossil fuel interests and climate science deniers, raising concerns about vested interests driving their anti-climate agenda. ✅ I don’t normally ‘get political’ but when a candidate for election is spouting misinformation which is so detrimental it has to be called out. #SorryNotSorry #Climate #Greenwashing #Environment

New research from CSSN scholars, "The Rise of Anti-Net Zero Populism in the UK: Comparing Rhetorical Strategies for Climate Policy Dismantling" explores a backlash against the net zero greenhouse gas emissions target within the UK. It introduces the term “anti-net zero populism” to analyse ideological and opportunistic counter-movements working to undermine climate policy. It builds a conceptual framework based on the literatures on “policy dismantling” and “discursive opportunity structures” to analyse how right-wing populists seek to undermine the net zero goal and dismantle policies. I'm really pleased to have written another article for Surface News. In this piece, I discuss the increasing political polarisation observed in the climate debate over the last few years and the implications of this for the future of climate policy. Arguably the most important issue that we are facing that needs immediate, impactful actions. It's not just the main parties in the UK that are ignoring the climate crisis. It is everywhere. Does that mean that polling shows people don't consider the climate crisis a decisive issue? If it showed in the polls, would it show in the party platforms? How can we use language that creates urgency, not paralysis, determination, not hopelessness? #votefortheplanet #environmentaljustice

Really important survey if you want your voice heard on climate change action at the local government level. Local Government may have smaller scope than State and Federal but they have much more freedom to take those incremental actions that add up to real change.
Don't be like Isbjorn. Isbjorn missed the Local Government Climate Review survey last time around, it was too much for her to bear. It means her voice, and her council's voice was not reflected in the Local Government Climate Review. Her voice wasn't in the report that is passed onto state and federal departments, politicians and senior ministers. Given the release of the Climate Change Authority's 2024 Issues paper last week, it's even more important to ensure your voice is heard. Key city networks, climate groups, ROCs, alliances like ICLEI Oceania, Climateworks Centre, Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (EAGA), Climate Emergency Australia, Better Futures Australia are already drafting up submissions to the report on behalf of local governments. This engagement with the Federal Government on Australia's updated emissions targets and climate programs will continue throughout 2025 and beyond. They need data and intel from councils, and the best way to have your voice heard is to have input into this year's LG Review. The more councils respond, the stronger the advocacy voice, the better chance we get support for local government programs - and the more chance that the ambitious targets and climate action underway at the local level is communicated to the state and federal levels.
