One of the most profound ways AI will improve lives is by accelerating science and discovery. This week, Demis Hassabis, James Manyika, and other Google leaders hosted our first-ever AI for Science Forum to share some of our recent progress here - from our work on the Nobel Prize-winning AlphaFold, which cracked the “grand challenge” of protein structure prediction, to connectomics research that helped map a tiny portion of the human brain in unprecedented detail to support health research, and much more.
AI research breakthroughs are leading to real-world benefits, for example: improvements to our AI model can now accurately predict floods days earlier than previously possible, while our high-resolution satellite imagery can help firefighters spot wildfires before they grow out of control.
To help others expand their impact, we're launching a $20 million fund to support academic and nonprofit organizations who are using AI to advance scientific breakthroughs. This is on top of the more than $200 million Google.org has provided for this work over the last five years.
AI has massive potential to benefit the world, so we are acting boldly to apply it as quickly as we can, while doing so responsibly. A huge thank you to all of the organizations and researchers around the world driving this important work forward.
