Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Coordinates in The First Quadrant Learning Objectives

The lesson plan aims to teach students about plotting and reading coordinates in the first quadrant. Students will start by adding and subtracting positive and negative integers on number lines to understand the axes. They will then learn that the x-axis is horizontal, y-axis is vertical, and their intersection is the origin. Students will plot coordinate pairs and solve simple geometry problems using coordinates. For differentiation, more able students may extend into other quadrants while less able students may need a refresher on basic 2D shapes.

Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Coordinates in the First Quadrant Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All

students should be able to plot and read coordinates in the first quadrant. Most students should be able to plot and read coordinates in the first quadrant and determine the midpoint of a line segment. Some students should be able to apply their knowledge of geometrical properties to solve problems in a grid. Key words: Grid, Axes, Axis, Coordinate pair, x, y, origin Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students add and subtract with positive and negative integers using the vertical or horizontal number lines. This is intended to place in context the origins of the axes so that students are able to use them when plotting coordinates on a grid. The class could work through the problems either in their book or using mini-whiteboards. Development Discuss the x axis as being horizontal and the y axis as vertical and where they meet is called the origin since all points are taken as reference from there. Explain how a coordinate pair is made up of an x (horizontal) and y (vertical) number which determines an object location from the origin. Work through the first set of points. Students could work through the second and third set with the teacher or on their own using the hand-out to accompany the slides. The third slide is intended to allow the students an opportunity to apply their knowledge of the coordinate system by solving simple geometrical problems. They may need to recap the vocabulary of 2D shapes. Students could work in pairs, writing on the worksheets. Plenary The plenary is intended to extend the idea of coordinates as students now need to visualise the axis using their knowledge of rectangles. Allow students plenty of time to attempt this and encourage them to support each other. This could be attempted on blank mini-whiteboards to encourage them to sketch their own axes. Differentiation More able: Students could extend into the 2nd, 3rd or all 4 quadrants. More problems similar to the plenary could be provided. Less Able Students may need to recap 2D properties. The phrase across the corridor and up the stairs could be used as a method for remembering the directions but may lead to problems when moving onto four quandrants.
