Assignment 2: Continuity, Intermediate Value Property

1. The document contains 10 problems related to continuity and intermediate value properties of functions. The problems involve showing functions are continuous, determining points of continuity, showing a function equals a constant value at a point, and demonstrating functions have real roots. 2. The problems cover a range of concepts including showing a function is Lipschitz continuous, determining rational and irrational values of a piecewise function on an interval, applying the intermediate value property, and analyzing properties of polynomials. 3. The problems progress from demonstrating basic properties like continuity to applying concepts like the intermediate value theorem to show functions attain values and polynomials have real roots.

1. (D) Let f : R R be such that for every x, y R, | f (x) f (y ) | | x y | . Show that f is continuous. 2. (T) Determine the points of continuity for the function f : [0, 1][0, 1] dened by 0 if x is rational f (x) = 1 if x is irrational 3. (D) Let f : (1, 1) R be a continuous function such that in every neighborhood of 0, there exists a point where f takes the value 0. Show that f (0) = 0. 4. (T) Let f : R R be a continuous function and let c R. Show that if x0 R is such that f (x0 ) > c, then there exists a > 0 such that f (x) > c for all x (x0 , x0 + ). 5. (D) Let f : R R satisfy f (x + y ) = f (x) + f (y ) for all x, y R. If f is continuous at 0, show that f is continuous at every point c R. 6. (T) Show that the polynomial x4 + 6x3 8 has at least two real roots. 7. (T) Let f : R R be a continuous function which takes only rational values. Show that f is a constant function. 8. (D) Let f : [a, b] R be a continuous function. Show that the range {f (x) : x [a, b]} is a closed and bounded interval. 9. (T) Let f : [0, 2] R be a continuous function and f (0) = f (2). Prove that there exist real numbers x1 , x2 [0, 2] such that x2 x1 = 1 and f (x2 ) = f (x1 ). 10. (D) Show that a polynomial of odd degree has at least one real root.
