Errors in Sampling

The document discusses population, sampling, types of sampling errors including sampling and non-sampling errors, causes of sampling errors and non-sampling errors, and sampling distribution. Sampling error is the difference between studying a sample versus the whole population, while non-sampling errors occur in data collection and cannot be attributed to sampling. Causes of errors include selection of improper samples, variability in the population, and inaccurate recording of data.

A brief Revision :
Population. Sample.
Sampling. Types-Random Sampling.

-Non-Random Sampling.

Sampling Errors :
In words of Patterson, "Sampling error is the difference between the results of studying a sample and inferring a result about the population , and the results of the census of the whole population.

Causes of Sampling Errors :

Selection of improper items as samples. Improper Substitution of the sample items. Bias in the estimating method. Variability of the population. Faulty demarcation of the statistical units. Fluctuations of Sampling. Smallness of the size of the sample.

Non-Sampling Errors :
In words of Patterson, Non Sampling errors are that occur in acquiring, recording , or tabulating statistical data that can not be ascribed to sampling error. They may arise in either a census or a sample .
No. of texts everyday

Causes of Non-Sampling Errors :

Ambiguous definitions of the terms used in enquiry. Incomplete or defective methods of Interview. Improper coverage or study. Errors in classification , tabulation or printing. Lack of qualified, trained and experienced personnel. False pride, and self interest of respondents. Personal bias, and prejudices of the enumerators. Inadequate or incomplete response from the target source.

Sampling Distribution :
Sampling distribution of a statistic is the frequency distribution which is formed with various values of a statistic computed from different samples of the same size drawn from the same population. This helps in :: To test a hypothesis, draw a inference from it. estimate unkown parameters through known statistic Set the limits under which paramaters will lie.
