Tutorial 3 - Chapter 13

This document contains 4 mechanics problems involving blocks on inclined planes or pulley systems. Problem 1 involves a single block sliding on a surface and calculating its velocity after moving a given distance. Problem 2 examines a pulley system with two blocks of different masses released from rest. Problem 3 analyzes the motion of a box being wound up by a motor that applies a varying force. Problem 4 looks at two connected blocks sliding down an inclined plane from rest. For each problem, free body diagrams are to be drawn and accelerations, tensions or velocities calculated.

TUTORIAL 3
1) The 5-kg block A in Fig. shown travels to the right at v
A
= 0.6 m/s at this instant
shown. If the coefficient of kinetic friction is
k
= 0.2 between the surface and block A,
determine the velocity of block A when it has moved 1.2 m. Block B has a weight of
100 N.

2) The block and pulley system as shown in Fig is realeased from rest. Block A and
block B have mass 100 kg and 300 kg respectively. The horizontal plane and the
pulley are frictionless, and pulley is assumed to be of negligible mass.
i) Draw the free body diagram for each block
ii) Determine the acceleration of each block and tension in the cord.

3) A motor shown in Fig. winds up a 10 kg box A with a force of F = (5t
3
+20) N where t
is in seconds. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and the plane
is u
k
= 0.25.
i) Draw free body diagram and kinetic diagram of box A
ii) Identify the type of acceleration influencing the motion of the box. Explain your
answer briefly.
iii) If the box is initially at rest, determine the acceleration and velocity of box A is
4 s later.

4) A 60 kg block A is connected to 20 kg block B as shown in Fig. The coefficient of
kinetic friction between block A and the incline plane is k = 0.20. If block A slides
down the plane and the system is released from rest.
i) Draw the free body diagram and the kinetic diagram of both blocks,
ii) Determine the acceleration of each block, and
iii) Calculate the tension in the cable
