Analysis of AC Circuits: VT and V T, and The Mesh Currents, It and I T

The document analyzes an AC circuit with two examples. In Example 1, node voltages and mesh currents are determined by representing the circuit in the frequency domain using impedances and writing the node and mesh equations in matrix form. The solution yields v1(t) = 3.318cos(10t - 39.3°) V, v2(t) = 4.452cos(10t - 12.7°) V, i1(t) = 0.4319cos(10t - 25.9°) A, and i2(t) = 0.2099cos(10t - 57.7°) A. In Example 2, given voltages and currents are used to determine

Analysis of AC Circuits

Example 1: Determine the node voltages, v1 ( t ) and v 2 ( t ) , and the mesh currents, i1 ( t ) and

i 2 ( t ) , for this circuit.

Example 2: In this circuit, the node voltages are

v1 ( t ) = 3.318cos (10 t 39.3 ) V and v 2 ( t ) = 4.452 cos (10 t 12.7 ) V ,

and the mesh currents are

i1 ( t ) = 0.4319 cos (10 t 25.9 ) A and i 2 ( t ) = 0.2099cos (10 t 57.7 ) A .

Determine the values of the resistances, inductances and capacitances.

Solutions
Example 1: Represent the circuit in the frequency domain using impedances and phasors:

where

1
j (10 )( 0.005)
15 ( j 20 )
Z2 =
=
= 9.6 j 7.2

j (10 )( 0.005 )

Z 1 = 30 + j (10 )( 2 ) = 30 + j 20 ,

Z 3 = j (10 )( 4 ) +

= j10 and
j (10 )( 0.002 )

Z4 =

( 30 ) j (10 )( 3) = 15 + j 15
30 + j (10 )( 3)

Z 4 V1 + ( Z 3 + Z 4 ) V2 = 0

Substituting the values of the impedances and writing the equations in matrix form gives

15 + j5 V 2

Solving, for example using MATLAB, we get

V1 = 3.318 39.3 V and V 2 = 4.452 12.7 V

Back in the time domain, the node voltages are

v1 ( t ) = 3.318cos (10 t 39.3 ) V and v 2 ( t ) = 4.452 cos (10 t 12.7 ) V

The mesh equations are

Z 1 I 1 + Z 2 ( I 1 I 2 ) 180 = 0

(Z

+ Z 2 ) I 1 Z 2 I 2 = 180

Z 3 I 2 + Z 4 I 2 Z 2 (I 1 I 2 ) = 0 Z 2 I 1 + (Z 2 + Z 3 + Z 4 ) I 2 = 0

Substituting the values of the impedances and writing the equations in matrix form gives

39.6 j12.8 9.6 + j 7.2 I 1 18

9.6 + j 7.2 24.6 j 2.2 I = 0

Solving, for example using MATLAB, we get
I 1 = 0.4319 25.9 A and I 2 = 0.2099 57.7 A

Back in the time domain, the mesh currents are

i1 ( t ) = 0.4319 cos (10 t 25.9 ) A and i 2 ( t ) = 0.2099cos (10 t 57.7 ) A
