Add Maths Form 5 (Chapter 1: Progressions)

The document discusses arithmetic progressions (AP) and provides examples and formulas to calculate terms in an AP sequence. It defines an AP as a sequence with a common difference between terms. The nth term formula is given as Tn = a + (n - 1)d, where a is the first term, d is the common difference, and n is the nth term. Examples are worked out to find the 30th term of an AP and to determine the number of terms in an AP given the first term, common difference, and value of the last term.

Add Maths Form 5 (Chapter 1: Progressions) Week 1 Notes

Arithmetic Progressions (AP)

exp.
(a) The sequence 2, 4, 6, 8, 10....... is an AP because it has a common
difference of 2.

4–2=2 6–4=2 8–6=2 10 – 8 = 2

(b) The sequence of -2, -5, -8, -11...... is an AP because it has a common
difference of -3.

-5 – (-2) = -3 -8 – (-5) = -3 -11 – (-8) = -3

𝑎 =the first term 𝑑=common difference 𝑛= 𝑛th term

𝑻𝒏 = 𝒂 + 𝒏 − 𝟏 𝒅 *The nth term formula.

exp.
(a) Find the 30th term of the AP 7, 10, 13, 16.....
1. List out the known numbers.
a = 7 , n = 30 , d = 10 – 7 = 3

2. Then substitute them to the formula!

T30 = 7 + (30 – 1)(3)
= 94

(b) Find the number of terms in the AP 5, 9, 13, 17, .... 181. ( this question
requires you to find n ! )
1. List out the known numbers.
a = 5 , d = 9-5 = 4 , * (we don’t know how many terms in the AP, but
we’re given the number of the last term) So, Tn=181.

2. Then substitute them to the formula!

181 = 5 + (n – 1)(4) *open the bracket
181 = 5 + 4n – 4 *arrange them
181 = 1 + 4n
180 = 4n *then find n! We’re done!
n = 45
