What a

A local family had its plans
for a riverfront compound on
four of Dalkeiths dress circle
blocks approved by Nedlands

oils, pearl nacre, oyster shell, energy, and emotion. The essence of what I do is alchemistic. Theres a lot of

I spoke with a group of 6015
ratepayers today.

quadruplexes in City Beach and
Floreat.
They are incensed by what
they feel to be misinformation
and insults.
The councils proposal is for
the benefit of developers, not
families in their suburbs, in
my opinion.
They resent being referred
to as snobs.
My experience is that the people in City Beach and Floreat
are ordinary hard-working
people who have struggled and

Memorial Park is a landmark

Carving up that green verge

there are plenty of other areas

The best two childcare

named and they are both in
Nedlands.
The University of WAs
Early Learning Centre and
Unicare Early Childhood
Education have achieved excellent ratings in the national
accreditation assessment.
So far, the state government
had inspected 86 centres
across the state, Community
Services Minister Tony

The ratings gave parents
information to help them
choose a centre, he said.
It is incredibly rewarding
to know these children are
attending a centre that understands the importance of
making the most of a childs
education from the beginning, Mr Simpson said.
Unicare director Karen

Once caught by police,

Building a case
A western suburb
builder is due in court next

The man was charged by

A woman complained
after she was stopped for a
random breath test outside
the Bold Park Community
School one morning.
It is understood the
woman felt the testing

Fun-filled fest
Congratulations to the
Cambridge council and the
organisers of the Cambridge

There was a large number of
people, particularly families,
enjoying the happy atmosphere
of the event.
Well done to everyone involved.

More
opportunities
to age in this
paradise
For this reason, we should applaud Cambridge council for taking a proactive approach to this
need for new housing diversity,
and for having commissioned a
comprehensive study of housing
type that can be introduced to
our much-loved neighbourhood
in a way that preserves the existing built form and streetscape.
This same study identifies
parts of Cambridge as suitable
for much higher density.
A quick drive around the
streets, and it is obvious that new
houses are getting bigger. Our
original 1960s white brick bungalow was 180sq.m and housed
four kids when it was built.
Todays houses are often
more than 400sq.m, with some
three-storey homes more than
600sq.m.
Using exactly the same footprint, site coverage and setbacks
of these houses allowed within
the current zoning, as defined
This Easter the Town of Cambridge is joining forces with Wembley and Cottesloe Police to remind us
that road safety is everyones responsibility. During the double demerits period from 2 to 6 April, local
police will pull over and reward drivers who display positive driving habits.

Harold Alfred Southern was
the oldest child of Mary and
Arthur. Born on October 26,
1889 in Surrey, UK, he came
out to Tasmania with his parents in mid-1890.
Arthur was the schoolmaster
at Bismarck, now Collinsvale,
north of Hobart, where five more
children were born between
1892 and 1901: Arthur, Gordon,
Muriel, Ben and Wilfred.
In 1903, the family moved to
Hobart where the older children
attended The Friends School.
In February 1904, Gordon
(10) died, which coincided with
the beginnings of financial difficulty. In 1906 creditors began
closing in. Arthur senior wrote
and cashed two false cheques
totalling 50 pounds (about $7000
today).
He was arrested in December
and charged with forging and
uttering. He pleaded guilty and
begged for leniency.
The charge carried the penalty
of a life sentence, but Arthurs
good standing within the
Bismarck community saved him.
Many testimonials to his good
nature were presented, resulting in the merciful sentence of
just 12 months in prison.
Somehow, though, only four
months later, Arthur quietly
arrived in Fremantle. With a
clean slate he was soon teaching once more.
In around 1909, Mary and
the children joined Arthur in
Perth.
Young Arthur began work-

ridge and formed a firing line,
covering the diggers, including
Arthur, still coming up.
The night was an utter disaster
during which the 16th Battalion
lost another third of its strength.
Fewer than 300 men answered
the soul-destroying roll call the
next morning.
Back home in WA, his parents
received word Harold had been
wounded, but not seriously. By
May 16, however, he was officially reported missing.
A week later a Court of Inquiry
was convened to declare dead
those missing. Witness statements included one from Private
William Hart ,who said Harold
was next to me. All of a sudden
he was hit and fell backwards.
It must have been in the throat
or chest as he made a gurgling
sound. I think the wound he
had received was fatal.
Coupled with Corporal
Alexander Bagieaus statement
which said he had seen Harold
the next morning lying flat on
his back evidently dead,
the army accepted Harold had
been killed in action the night
of May 2 to 3.
Somehow, his parents were
not notified and in late July they
opened a letter from English
relatives and read with horror their commiserations on
Harolds death.
They sent an urgent telegram
to the army, asking What does
this mean? The armys enquiries eventually confirmed their
worst fears.
In a letter on June 23, 1916,
they wrote: Later we heard
that the officers of the 16th had
no idea we had not had official
news. Considering the trying circumstances we are not surprised
that some documents were lost
or overlooked at Gallipoli.
Harolds death was a huge
blow to the Department of
Mines, whose report, published
in The Kalgoorlie Miner of
June 19, 1916, noted Harolds
brilliant abilities and high
character, lamenting his
death as an irreparable
loss and a deplorable
waste of his exceptional
abilities.
In contrast, Arthurs absence went unnoticed and
it was some time before
he was officially reported
missing.
At a Court of Inquiry in
Egypt in April 1916, Arthur too
was officially declared killed
in action the night of May 2 to
3, 1915.

Is there a theme or story which shapes the
way in which we see the world and live in it?
If there is, what is it? The passion, death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ are the great narratives by which many people over centuries
have lived. This Easter, I hope we allow ourselves to be captivated by the real-life drama
of Gods sacrificial love which is stronger than
death, and which brings us new life.

Method:
1. Put almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts
in a food processor and blitz until
they are finely ground.
2. Add dates, one at a time, and
process until you get a sticky mix.
3. Scoop the mix into a bowl and mix
in the coconut butter and berries by
hand; do not over mix, keeping the
berries as whole as possible
(this will make them pop with flavour
when eating).
4. Press the mix into an egg mould and
place it in the fridge (or freezer) to
set.

Zoe Richards, from the WA Museum, examines corals at one of the ancient Leluh tombs. Photo: Jean-Paul Hobbs
she said.
That showed the tombs were
built in the 1300s, the first one in
about 1310.
Dr Richards said it was believed the Leluh tombs were
temporary processing points
for dead kings and high-status
individuals.
Determining the age of the
coral doesnt just date the tombs
more accurately, it gives us information about what was once a
thriving capital city, she said.
At its peak, Leluh supported
a complex hierarchical society
of 1500 people, including kings,
chiefs and commoners.
Legend has it that the coral
was taken from the surrounding
shallow reef and that people
formed a long chain across the
reef to pass coral by hand.
The ancient city of Leluh fell
into disrepair in the 19th century
following a typhoon, an increase
in foreign ships, pirates and
traders, and a rapid population
decline due to diseases introduced by foreigners.

Imports to slow
The falling Aussie dollar
will have implications in our
wine industry and for the
better.
Not only will our exports
be cheaper and help us
sell more wine overseas,
but the price of imports
will also generally
increase, and that
should have us drinking
more local wine.
The recent high dollar
has seen many different
wines from many
countries arrive in
Australia at realistic
prices. It has been an
educational ride for
drinkers as they have
sampled a range of
different varieties and
styles, and this has
broadened their outlook.
It will be interesting to
see what importers do
with a lower dollar.
They will definitely be
pulling back on the
wines they ship here,
but will they reduce
quality and keep prices
the same, or keep
the same quality and
increase prices?
Sales will fall, whatever
happens.
At a recent panel tasting
of medium-priced
imports, mainly reds,
we were disillusioned
by the standard. A
number of faulty wines
circled the tasting table
and because screwtops outnumbered
corks, there was little
blame attributed to the
traditional closure.
Old-world rudimentary
wine-making received
some flak, as did poor
vintages. Inferior storage
and shipping were a
major concern.
Wine will always drink
at its best in the winery,
where it is made,
because it has not
travelled or experienced
adverse conditions that
affect quality.

We are allowed
to take that into account, he said.
It is very important
we look at the value of
that space, if it could
be used other than
what it is described
as on the plan.
He said the plans
showed there was no
theatre, no gymnasium
no billiard rooms.
This space could
easily be converted
later, he said
I cannot believe
in this day and age
of digitalised storage there would be a
need for this amount
of storage.
Councillor Kerry
Smyth said owners
use was credible.
I do think the focus
is cooking, food storage and wine and
artefacts.
They have not gone
for billiard rooms and
theatres and that is
their choice and lifestyle.
Mayor Max Hipkins
said information to
the council about
such things as illegal
change of use usually came from complaints.
The council has the
power to enter any
property and inspect,
he said.
Councillor Bill
Hassell said: Views
from Jutland Parade
will appear as two
storey because other
levels wont be visible from Jutland
Parade.
He added that conflicting advice from the
council and developers lawyers had been
singularly unhelpful.
Both look at the
same authorities and
reach different conclusions, he said.
Asked how high they
would be compared
with 64 currently under
construction in the City
of Nedlands, planning
officer Peter Mickelson
said from memory they
would be lower.
He understood the
Swan River Trust had
not objected to the
project.

From page 3
They [the police]
were not as helpful as
I would have hoped,
she said.
They told me it
would take a week to
process the claim.
I don't understand
why it should take a
week. This man is still
on the loose.
Cottesloe police station officer-in-charge
Neil Morton-Smith
said on Wednesday
that they were still
investigating the incident and had liaised
with Swan Taxis.
But Swan Taxis
told the POST it had
no record of the incident.
Jane said the taxi
driver was Caucasian
with a heavy build,
more than 180cm tall,
with unkempt dark
brown hair and facial
hair.
It really shook me
to think about what
could have happened
if that resident wasn't
there, she said.
Faf du Plessis
Morne Morkel
might surprise a few as well.
The Dockers still look very
nifty to me, but I am not so
confident that the Eagles will be
able overcome their injury list
and win too many games against
the top teams in the comp.
I hope I am wrong. Time will
tell.
I am so overwhelmed lately,
I get tired just watching all
this sport.
Have to put the old pushbike in mothballs for a while
and load up with crackers and
cheddar.
Master blaster Opening batsman David Warner crafts another innings for Australia.
Most of these mammoth totals
were inflicted by the haves
against the have-nots in the
lead-up matches, but then in
the New Zealand-West Indies
quarter-final, the Kiwis took the
Calypso Kings with the relish of
a kid in an ice-cream parlour
with a pocketful of money.
If all this run-glut carnage
doesnt put the topic of heavy
bats under the microscope of
the wise men of the game, what
will?
Test legend Barry Richards
was one of the first to raise this
question in this column more
than two years ago.
In the POST, December 29,
2012, Richards labelled the
modern-day bats as the bazookas
of Australian sport.
Richards contended that
hitting a cricket ball with a
modern bat was like a firing a
missile through an armoured
truck by a shoulder-held rocket
launcher.
I knew there was a serious problem, Richards said,
when an edge from a David
Warner hook shot went flying
away for six.
When mishits are going for
six, things are far too much in
favour of the batsman.
Strangely enough, a comparison of the weights of the bats of
yesteryear and today doesnt
reveal much difference.
Without getting too technical, the old bats weighed two

Hi Kids,
Ravindu Pothpitage (7), from

bold red hat gives his rabbit loads of

right for munching carrots. I think
my dog might be part rabbit because
he loves carrots!
Ava Skeldon (8), from City Beach,
is also a winner. I love the colours

yours to be?
Easter bunnies figured greatly
