Process Control - Assignment 1

This document contains an assignment for a Process Dynamics and Control course. It includes 4 questions related to solving differential equations, modeling a stirred-tank blending system, analyzing transfer functions, and taking the Laplace transform of a rectangular pulse input. Students are instructed to write their name, student number, subject number, and lecturer's name on the first page. The assignment is due on August 20, 2015 and late assignments will be penalized 20% per day.

CEIC3006 Process Dynamics and Control

Assignment 1

Write your name, student number, subject number, lecturers name (Prof. J. Bao) on
the first page of your assignment.
Submit your assignment to the Assignment box on Level 3, Chemical Sciences Building
(near the School Oce).
The due date for this assignment is 10:00am Thursday, 20 August 2015.
Late assignments will attract a penalty at a rate of 20% per working day.

1. Find the solutions to the following dierential equations:

2

d2 x
dx
+ 5 + 2x = 3
2
dt
dt
x (0) = x (0) = 0.

(1)
(2)

Use the Final Value Theorem to determine x (t) as t from X (s). NB: Dots
denote dierentiation with respect to time.
2. A stirred-tank blending system initially is full of water and is fed caustic solution of
concentration ci at the volumetric flow rate q. Assume the outlet flow rate is also q. If
the liquid volume V is constant, the dynamic model for this process is:
V

dc(t)
+ qc(t) = qci (t)
dt

(3)

with c (0) = 0. (Data: V = 2 m3 ; q = 0.4 m3 /min.)

(a) Write the transfer function that relates the concentration of the euent stream
c(t) to the concentration of the feed flow ci (t).

(b) Assume initially the stirred tank blending system is fed pure water at a constant
flowrate q. At a particular time, an operator stops the water flow and adds
caustic solution at the same volumetric flow rate q but concentration ci = 50
kg/m3 . What is the concentration response of the euent stream, c (t)?
3. Consider the following transfer function:
G (s) =

Y (s)
5
=
.
U (s)
10s + 1

(4)

(a) If U (s) = 2/s, what is the value of the output when t = 10?
(b) If U (s) = (1 es ) /s, what is the output when t ?
(c) If u (t) = (t), that is, the unit impulse at t = 0, what is the output when t ?
(d) If u (t) = 2 sin(3t), what is y (t) when t ?
4. Prove that the Laplace transform of the rectangular pulse input

0 t<0
h 0 t < tw
u(t) =

0 t tw
is
L [u (t)] =

)
h(
1 etw s .
