Getting Ready
Letter of Introduction/parents
Dear parent or parents,
Summer break is over and I am excited to welcome you to another school year with just a
brief introduction about myself and my classroom. I am originally from Carroll County, which is
located in Southwest Virginia. I Graduated from Emory and Henry College with a degree in
mathematics and I am certified to teach 6-12 grade math.
th

I am the type of person that likes to move around; this means that your child will not just
be sitting in their desks and working out math problems. I believe that moving around helps the
brain think, which leads to more learning. I hope to provide an engaging atmosphere that will
improve your childs learning. My main goal (besides students learning) is having a classroom
environment that students will look forward to coming to. Also, I believe everyone should be
treated fairly, so you do not have to worry if another child is receiving or not receiving the same
amount of fairness from me.
I would also like for us to have good communication and I invite you to email me
anytime with questions about your child and I will get back to you in a timely manner.
Thank you,
Mr. Lineberry

You will get to know me better in the coming days, but the main thing that I expect from
you is your respect for me. I am going to respect you and I feel that it is only fair that I receive
that same respect. If we do this we will have a great year and achieve great things in class.
Finally, I encourage you to come to me with any questions that you may have about me or my
classroom.
Thank you,
Mr. Lineberry

First Day of School Schedule/Opening Day Script

1. Already have assigned seats for the students.
2. Great each student at the door and have them find their seat.
3. First 5-10 min of class students will work on the opening day bellringer
4. Next I will take up the activity and then give a brief 5 min introduction of myself
5. After that I will allow students to ask questions about myself for around 5 minutes
6. For next 10 minutes I will go over our everyday procedures that will be used in the class
and we will start practicing these when the students walk in the door the next day.
7. Then I will allow student 10-15 min to come up with 5 classroom rules that we will all
vote on. (To go along with the rules I will already have in place.)
8. Finally, with whatever time is left I will go over the syllabus (grading scale, pacing guide,
calendar, etc.) and any school rules that I am told to go over with the students.

Getting Acquainted/Opening Day Bellringer Activity

The getting acquainted activity will act as the bellringer for the first class. The activity
will be for the students write a paragraph or two about anything they want me to know about
them. The students can write anything from what their favorite color is to their favorite hobby. I
will read these and the next day I will talk to the students about things that I found interesting in
the paragraphs.

Then to allow the students to get acquainted with me, I am going to give them a brief 5
minute introduction about myself and what type of classroom environment I like. After this I will
give students 5 min to ask me any questions that they have about me or my classroom (having
the proper classroom etiquette) and I will answer them to the best of my ability (having proper
classroom etiquette).

Procedures to Teach Procedures

If time allows, on the first day of school we will walk through the classroom procedures,
if not we will do this on the second day of school.
1. Go through each procedure scenario at the appropriate time.
2. Have students put a piece of paper (paper in place of actual homework) in their
homework folder that will be located on my desk as soon as they get in the classroom.
3. Tell students that it is now time to start on the bellringer, which will be a procedure every
day. Also tell students to put their name, date, block #, and hw for homework, cw for
class work, or br for bellringer on the top right of their paper ( this will be the procedure
for putting their names on all their work)
4. When students are finished with bellringer I will tell them to pass their papers to front
putting their paper on top of the papers that they get from behind them. Then I will let the
students know that this will be the procedure every time I take up papers during class.
5. Sometime during the class I will randomly start counting down from 5 (out loud and on
my hand), after this gets their attention I will tell the students that this will be the
procedure for getting the class attention. (Will practice more throughout the day)

6. Show students the Make-Up work folder and explain to them that if they come in tardy
they will come in and get started on what we are doing and at the end of class they will
go to the Make-Up work folder and get the work that they missed. The same goes for a
student being absent except as soon as they come in the next day they go to the folder and
retrieve their make-up work.
7. Tell students to bring in a book to read just in case they finish early and if I do not want
them to go on to any other work.

CM Plan
Daily Schedule
90 min block schedule: Normal daily routine
1. 5-10 min for a bell ringer/warming up activity.
2. 15-20 min for taking up homework and reviewing homework/reviewing material from
days prior.
3. 20-25 min for the days lesson.
4. 15-20 min for guided practice/cooperative learning.
5. Rest of class time for independent practice.
Schedule is flexible.

Bellringer assignments
I feel that having an engaging bellringer activity is critical for good classroom
management. If these assignments are engaging, then it will set the tone for the rest of class
period. Though, the bellringer should also be content oriented, (also using them as review works
great as well) but if you make the assignment relative to the students; it will be engaging. Also,
the bellringer is going to be on the board and ready for the students to complete as soon as they
arrive at class. This will also act as the everyday class opening procedure. The students will
complete the daily bellringers on the same page, or consecutive pages, and I will be taking them
up at the end of every week for a weekly grade.

If Students finish Early

The majority of the time if students finish early I will have some more work for them to go
onto, that still pertains to daily topic. Though that being said, I also dont believe in giving
students pointless busy work (especially if they were on task and finished their work in a timely
manner), so if there is nothing else for student to work forward the student will then be instructed
to read (students will know that they need to bring a book took class every day in case of this
situation). I will also have a few books in my classroom and a few fun math games for this
situation.

Getting the class attention and quieting the class procedure

It is important that you have a procedure to get the class attention and the procedure that
I plan use and teach my students, is simply just making any type of clapping rhythm that the

10

students will have to repeat back to me. We will also practice this during the first day class, so
the students can learn the procedure.
I will also use this to quite class, if the students are not responding to me counting down
from 5. The students will know that clapping means one of two things, either I need their
attention for any different type of reason or I need the class to quiet down (with both work hand
in hand).

Listening to/responding to questions

If a student has asked a question appropriately, first I will make sure the rest of the class is
quiet; one so I can hear the students question and two, it would be rude for the rest of the class
to be talking while a student is trying to ask a question. Then, I will listen attentively to question
that the student is raising. I will respond to a students question in the manner that I seem
appropriate for the particular question. If the question is reasonable and on topic, I will answer
with an in depth response the question that was posed. If the question is not on topic or not
appropriate (not appropriate in a school building), I will respond a few different ways. One, if the
question is off topic I will respond by not answer the question and saying something to get the
class back on topic (This is math class and we talk about math in this class: for example).
Another way I might respond to an off topic question is to not even acknowledge the question
and keep on with what I was doing (students will know that they are not to ask inappropriate
questions in class). Also, if a student asks an inappropriate question (inappropriate for school) I
will follow whatever procedure that the school has in place.

Getting the Teachers Attention

11

Getting my attention will be simple. The students will know that to get my attention they
are to raise their hand and if I do not see them they can call my name as long as I am not busy
with another task.

Roll Taking Procedure

1. First I will have the students in assigned seats (most likely in alphabetical order). That
will allow me to call roll by the seating arrangement and will help learn all of the students
names at the beginning of school.
2. For the first few weeks I will call every students name and have them to say present.
This will allow me to put their face and their voice with their name.
3. After I feel that I have every students name remembered I will just count the
students/look for an empty desk to see who is absent. I will do this while the students are
finishing up with their bellringer activity for the day.

Students work

Heading for all students work: Students will be asked to head their papers by writing their
first and last name in the top right corner of their paper. Below their name students will
put the days date; below that students will write what class they are in (block 1, block 2,
etc.) Then below all of that and still in the top right corner of their paper the students will
write the name of the activity. Students will be told and shown this on the first day of
class, whenever we are going over the classroom procedures.

Collecting papers: Since the students are going to be sitting in alphabetical order (front to
back by individual seats and then left to right by rows), I will have them to pass their

12

papers forward and each student will put their paper on top of the papers that they collect
from behind them. Then once all of the papers are at the front of each row; starting with
the far right row, they will pass the papers to the left and each row that receives papers
will put their papers on top and then pass the papers to the left. This will be taught and
practiced the first time the students need to turn in their work (which will be the opening
day bellringer). This will also make it easier on me to grade and record grades because I
will have my grade book or power school set up in alphabetical order.

Distributing papers: After I record all of the students work (their work will still be in
alphabetical order) I will be able to walk down every row and hand the papers out
alphabetically to the students.

Tardy/Absent Procedures

Tardy Procedures: If the student is tardy and it is not excused the student will not be able
to make up any work that they missed while they were out of class. For example if the
student is tardy and is not able to complete the days bellringer, he or she will not be able
to make up that bellringer. If a student comes to me with an excused tardy note, then they
will be able to make up the work that they missed. Though, the work that they make up
will be homework that they will have to make up out of class time. I will also discipline
tardies by the rules that the school will already have in place.

Student Absentee Procedures: If a student happens to be absent they will know that
whenever they arrive back in my class all of their make-up work will be in a Make-UP
Work folder in the back of classroom. The student will know this because we will go
over this procedure on the first day of class, so it is up to the student to retrieve their

13

make-up work from the folder. The make-up work will have the students name on it, so
they will know exactly what to do. Also, the student will have the number of days that
they were absent plus two days to turn in their make-up work (absent 1 day students has 3
days to turn in all make-up work, 2 days and the student will 4 days to turn in work, etc.).

Homework Procedures
1. Students will know that if I assign homework that I expect that homework to be turned in
on the next day.
2. Every day late (except if the student is absent) the grade on the homework will be taken
down by 10 points.
3. After a students grade is taken down by 40 points (or the highest possible grade they can
receive is a 60), the student will no longer be able to turn in their work and it will become
a zero.
4. There will be some homework assignments that will be graded for completion, but these
will be under my discrepancy.
5. Students will turn in homework in the fashion that was before mentioned under the
collecting papers procedures.
6. These procedures will also be taught on the first day of school.

Teacher Away From the Room Procedures

If for some reason I have to leave the room; first I will try to find another teacher that has
planning during that class period and they can watch the class while I take care of the business
that I need to attend to. If I cannot find a teacher that is free to watch my class, I will assign the

14

student that I feel is most responsible to watch the class. This student will report the behavior of
the classroom back to me whenever I return to the classroom. Lastly, I will only be away from
the classroom if it is an absolute emergency.

Pencil Sharpener Procedures

The pencil sharpener procedure is really simple. If the student needs to sharpen their
pencil, all they have to do is hold their pencil in the air to get my attention and will nod my head
to allow them to get up and go to the pencil sharpener.

Classroom Rules

No talking unless called upon or instructed.

Raise hand to be called upon.

Stay in seat unless otherwise stated.

Respect: me, yourself, fellow classmates, and school property.

Also, on the first day of school I will allow students to vote on their own set of rules that
they feel they need as a classroom (other than the rules already stated).

Classroom Consequences
1. Warning
2. Meeting with me
3. Principal's office
4. Detention
5. Call home

15

These are the list of consequences that I will use in my classroom; I will also abide by
any list of consequences that the school has already put in place.

Classroom Rewards
I believe that rewarding the classroom with a small treat is a good way to promote proper
behavior and engagement in the classroom. There will be two different ways in which the class
can earn an award. First if there are no discipline issues throughout the entire week, the class will
get a small reward on Friday. Second on any test that I administer and the class average is above
90 percent, the class will get a small reward on the following day of handing back the tests. The
students will have a vote on what type of reward they will receive. I will give them different
options to choose from; for example the students could either choose from bringing money to go
to the vending machines during class, having class outside (or outside of the classroom), or
sitting where they want for a day.

Recognize Positive Behavior

All kids no matter what age want and need attention, which is why it is important to give
students attention. It is vitally important that you give students positive attention and letting them
know that you recognized the student being good. If not, the student will start to behave
inappropriately in order to receive your attention. On the flip side of that, if you acknowledge
them for their good behavior it will provoke them to have continued good behavior because they
want that positive attention. I will give students positive acknowledgement in a few different
ways. I could tell the individual student at the end of class that I really liked how attentive and
engaged he or she was in class today. I can also write short positive notes on the work that I hand

16

back to the students. These notes can either be recognizing their behavior and/or congratulating
them on their great work.

Behavior Interventions
Behavioral interventions will go along with the consequences of the classroom rules. If
these consequences do not work I will go through these steps to hopefully improve the students
behavior:
1. The student and I will sit down one-on-one and talk through the behavior problems that
we are experiencing in the classroom.
2. The student, the principal and or the guidance counselor, and I will sit down and talk
through the behavior problems that the student and I are experiencing in the classroom.
3. The student, the principal and/or the guidance counselor, parents or guardians, and I will
sit down and talk through the behavioral problems that the student and I are experiencing
in the classroom.

Posting Homework Assignments

Homework will be posted on the board near the end of every class, for that specific class.
Homework assignments will also be posted on a parent portal website (if the school has such) by
the end of every day. This way students and parents will always know what assignments the
students are expected to complete.

The First Homework Assignment

17

The first homework assignment will just simply be writing a short paragraph including at
least 4 things that the student hopes they will learn during my class.

Teaching Materials
Organizing Me
To keep myself organized, I will keep all of my lesson plans in a 3in 3-ring binder. I will
also have dividers in my 3-ring binder that will divide my plans (and my materials for that
particular unit) into the specific units that I will be teaching. Then I will keep my desk clear of
any items or papers that I am not currently using. I will also have specific folders and documents
on file in my computer for lessons and content material.

Materials for the Classroom

I will use different types of materials in my classroom that will make me a more effective
teacher. Here are some materials that I plan to use:

Computer- to record information and to also research other teaching materials, strategies,
worksheets, etc.

Teacher edition textbook- so I can assign homework and classwork. Also, so I can
explore other ways of teaching the students material.

Expo markers for whiteboard

My lesson plan binder

Then anything that will promote more effective teaching.

18

Preparing For a Substitute

Whenever I prepare for a substitute I will make sure that I give specific detailed plans for
the substitute to follow. Also, I will make sure that if I am going to be out of school that we will
not be starting a new topic while I am out. That way the students will have a good idea of how to
complete the assignments that I leave for the substitute to give them. Then I will provide the
substitute with a copy of my class rules and have them to leave me a note if he or she has any
discipline issues. My main goal when preparing for a substitute is to leave very detailed
instructions so that substitute will be able to perform their job at a high level.

Student Materials
Organizing Content of Student Storage
Students will only bring materials that are needed for my classroom whenever they come
to my class. With this being said there should not be a major need for student storage in my
classroom setting. Though, I will neatly organize all materials and assignments that students turn
in to me. I will have a folder bin in a designated spot in the classroom. In that bin I will have two
folders for each of my classes. One folder will be for all of the assignments that students turn in
and the other will be to put all of the graded assignments in (until I hand them back out to the
student). Also, I will have a few small storage bins that will be in a designated spot in classroom.

19

In these bins I will keep materials like glue, rulers, markers, pencil, and anything else that the
students may need to perform their tasks.

Seating
Floor Plan for the Classroom
If my room allows, I plan to have desks lined up in rows facing the front (or wherever the
board is located). Also, I would like to make sure that there is plenty room in between the rows
and throughout the entire classroom. This will allow to better move around and monitor the
classroom. Then I plan on placing my desk in either of the front corners of the room such that I
am facing the students. I feel as if facing the students is a very important classroom management
strategy, because if you are facing the students they can feel your presence and are more inclined
to stay on task.

Seating arrangement/assignments
The very first seating assignment will be in alphabetical order. This will enable me to
learn the students name in the quickest fashion possible. This will also help me take roll for the
first week or two, because if there is a student missing I can just look at my class roster (which I
assume will be alphabetical order) and that will tell me who is absent. Students will only be
seated alphabetical until I have all of their names to their faces.
After I have remembered all of the students names and have gotten a good feel on each
of the students behavior I will make a new seating arrangement. The new seating arrangement

20

will be designed with a few different things in mind. First, I will need to make sure that I try my
best not to sit a student close to another student, such that the two students will cause behavioral
problems. This could mean that it is obvious that the two students do not like each other and they
would constantly fighting and arguing with each other during class. Or on the other hand the two
students are really close friends and it would be hard for them not to disrupt class by sitting next
to each other. The next thing that I will take into account is the students eyesight, whether or not
that particular student needs to sit in the front of the room or close to board in order to see the
teaching material that I will be displaying. Then I also have to in account the height and size of
students. I have do this because it is not a good idea to sit a 6ft tall student in front of a 5ft
student. This would inhibit the ability of the smaller student to see the board. No matter how the
seating arrangement turns out it needs to be an arrangement that provides the students with the
greatest possible chance of excelling in your class.

Working Together in Groups

There will be opportunities for students to work in groups in my classroom. I feel that
cooperatively learning is an excellent form of learning and it can also help students in ways other
than just learning the material. Though, there will be times where groups are used in my
classroom, the students will not be picking their own groups. From my experience of being a
student and student teaching, whenever students pick their own groups there is very rarely
anything good to come out of it. I will strategically place students in groups that will allow for
the greatest potential of learning to take place. For instance, if there is a student that is not very
motivated, I will place that student with another student or students that will help that student to
be motivated. Also, in group work there is a problem of certain group members doing much more

21

than the other unmotivated students. To help this problem I will assign each student a specific job
to carry out in their respective groups. This will ensure that every student has some sort of
accountability for the group.

Student Movement
Students entering/leaving the classroom
Whenever students enter the room they will know that there is a bellringer on the board
that they need to complete. This means the students will know that their procedure for entering
the classroom is to:
1. Find their seat and get all of their needed materials out
2. Find the bellringer (will be either written or projected on the board at the front of the
classroom)
3. Complete the assignment in a calm and timely manner
4. Then whenever students are leaving the classroom they will know that they need to put
their completed exit slip in their designated exit slip spot for their class (The exit slip
will be given to the students when there is approximately 5 minutes left of class time).
Students will also know that they are not allowed to pack up their materials until the bell
rings for their dismissal; this also goes for the end of day dismissal procedure.

Movement about the room procedure

22

The students will understand that they are not supposed to be up moving around the
classroom unless I have instructed them to do so. There will be certain times throughout the
semester/year when students will be required to get up and move around the classroom in order
to complete a project or any other class assignment. During this the students will know that they
are to move around the classroom in a respectful and orderly manner and they will also know
that if they do not move in this manner their freedom to move around the classroom will be taken
away from them.

Bathroom Procedures
Unless there is a school wide bathroom procedure I will allow students the freedom of
going to the restroom whenever they need to the go. Though, this freedom can be quickly taken
away if I deem that the students are abusing the freedom. If the students to abuse the freedom of
using the restroom whenever they need too I will start only allowing students to use the restroom
once per week and I will have the students sign-out of the class so I keep record of whenever
they used the restroom. The reason I want to give the students the freedom of restroom visits is
because I remember a number of times that I was tortured by not be allowed to use the bathroom
when I needed too. Whenever I was a student I had to use the bathroom frequently (Im sure that
Im not the only person to experience this) and there were a number of times when I felt tortured
by not being allowed to use the restroom.

Other Student Movement Procedures

Other student movement procedures include walking in the hall, disaster drill procedures,
and sudden student illness procedures. For these procedures I will abide by the list of procedures

23

that the school I am working for has set in place. I will also makes sure that my students know
these procedures and I will practice these procedures (especially disaster drill procedures) with
my students if the need be. Otherwise my students will be expected to use common sense to
carry out these procedures.
