ME 623A: Finite Element Methods in Engineering Mechanics
Assignment 3
Due on Tuesday, 9/2/2016 at 5.00 pm
1. Write shape functions Ni() for a three node truss finite element in the local coordinate system.
Consider the central node to be at the half way. Now, evaluate the stiffness matrix and force
vector for the element. Consider the force to be a distributed load.
2. Consider the following BVP:
u,xx + 100 = 0, 0 < x < 1
u(0) = u(1) = 0.
Solve the above BVP using (i) only one linear element, (ii) only one quadratic element, (iii) only
two linear elements, and (iv) only two quadratic elements. In all the cases plot and compare the
calculated u(x) and u(x) with their exact counterparts. Also compare the solution that you
obtained in Assignment-2 (Q. 4 (iii)) using two parameter Galerkin approximation employing
trigonometric functions.
3. The bar in Fig. 1 carries two axial loads P = 200 kN as shown. The goal is to find nodal
displacements, stress distribution and the reaction forces. This will be done following the two
procedures outlined below:
(i) Mesh AB and BC using one linear truss finite element each.
(ii) Mesh AB and BC using two linear truss finite elements each.
(iii) Mesh AB and BC using two quadratic truss finite elements each.
For all the cases above compare nodal displacements, stress distribution and the reaction
forces.

4. For an Euler-Bernoulli beam finite element obtain Ni() and plot these over -1 < < +1.
5. For the above calculate the stiffness matrix using Ni().
6. In Assignment-2, the equilibrium equation in Q. 1(ii) was that of an Euler-Bernoulli beam resting
on an elastic foundation of stiffness k per unit length. For this problem derive the element
stiffness matrix and element load vector.
