PHY 121 Electromagnetic Theory Problem Set - 5

This physics problem set is assigned for March 21 and due on March 25 at 5:00 PM, consisting of 4 problems involving calculating magnetic fields for different electromagnetic configurations such as a toroid, magnetic dipole, paired solenoids, and a bent wire; students are encouraged to work with classmates but must complete their own work to be prepared for exams.

Electromagnetic Theory
Problem Set - 5

Assigned Date: Mar 21

Due Date: Mar 25

This problem set is due at 5 : 00 PM on Mar 25. Do not consult any online material. Working
with your classmates is encouraged! But you should only hand in work that youve completed on
your own. If you cant explain each step of your solution then you havent completed the problem
on your own. Remember: the only way to be ready for the exams is to do the assignment yourself.
1. (10 points) Consider a toroid that consists of N turns, with inner radius a and outer radius b.
Find the magnetic field everywhere.
2. (10 points) Let a magnetic dipole moment vector
~ = z k be placed at the origin in the yz
plane. Find the magnetic field at a point a distance r away from the origin.
3. (10 points) Consider two solenoids (each of N -turns) of radius R, each perpendicular to the axis
of symmetry, with their centers located at z = l/2. There is a steady current I in the same
direction around each coil. Find the magnetic field at a distance z from the centre of the coil.
What happens if the current flow in the coils are in opposite directions?

4. (10 points) An infinitely long current-carrying wire is bent into a hairpin-like shape shown. Find
the magnetic field at the point P that lies at the center of the half-circle.
